A mining disaster leaves 23 bodies recovered as rescuers work through the mine where an explosion trapped workers. Authorities await official casualty figures and safety officials inspect the site for causes.
A massive blast at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Primero mine in Primero, Colorado, reportedly killed hundreds. Rescue workers recovered seventy nine bodies by midnight as shaft collapses trapped others. officials say as many as 150 men were underground and many are entombed. Women and children gathered in sorrow while doctors and a coroner arrived to assist.
Texas cattlemen fear government action against packers and labor union meat boycotts will depress prices next spring. With about 250,000 beef cattle in South Texas ready for market, ranchers warn they may lose hundreds of thousands of dollars if agitation continues.

About eight miles above Bastrop on the Hemphill farm a buffalo skeleton was found standing erect in a river bluff. The bones rise twelve feet from the ground and twenty feet from the water, the river’s rise threatening a cave in the bluff.

A man calling himself Dan Horner was arrested at New Braunfels, charged with attempting to murder City Detective Newman in San Antonio on January 10. Sheriff W. A. Adams of Comal County and Detective Walter Neal of Bexar County led the arrest, with a French woman posing as Alice Horner also taken into custody as a suspected companion of Borrer. Officers say they hold strong evidence against Horner.
