The state mailed a $9,335,802 check to public schools as the third per capita payment authorized by the 51st Legislature. The sum comprised 1,554,671 scholastics. Mr and Mrs Ed E Kolar were in Houston last Friday attending to business matters.
Ed E. Kolar and his wife begin a new residence in the southeastern city area along Highway 95. The house is described as one of the most beautiful and modern in the county. Mrs. Theodore Schreiber of San Antonio is visiting relatives and friends nearby this week.
Mr and Mrs R M Smith of Houston visited his parents Mr and Mrs F C Smith here Sunday. Mr and Mrs Robert Harris of LaGrange and Mr and Mrs Arthur Schodde of Cuero visited home folks here last week. Mrs Ed Boehm Sr and Mr and Mrs Elo C Fehrenkamp spent Sunday in Schulenburg. Mr and Mrs Louis P Boehm spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Fred Wiedeman in Flatonia ds.
Col Paul Wakefield, Texas selective service director, said 45 000 men are fit for service with 13 177 classified and 4 848 18 year olds registered in November. He noted 1 357 men could be inducted on ten days notice and the pool could be sent for armed forces examinations promptly. No draft calls have occurred since last January.
The Garden Club in Flatonia installed officers led by President Mrs F Pechacek and Vice President Mrs F X Brunner. Committee chairs include H Wehmeyer program and Miss Margaret Keil hospitality. Local residents and out of town visitors are listed with travels to Houston and San Antonio for family events and work updates.
Lorbeeren Lodge No. 63 auxiliary to the Sons of Herman elected Hilda Warnek president for the coming year. Other officers named include Anna Bratrich as vice president Martha Hoepfl as secretary treasurer Louise Schacherl as guide Anna Flessner as inner guard Katy Hoepfl as outer guard and Emma Schodde and Theresa Grunwald on the finance committee.
Agreement with the Moulton Chamber of Commerce schedules Christmas holidays for December 25 and 26 and New Year holidays for January 1 and 2 for most local business houses.
M E Helweg of Waelder purchases the Taylor Cafe in Waelder. Helweg is the son of Mrs Louise Helweg of Moulton.
The Women's Missionary Society met December 14 in the Lutheran Educational Building for their monthly gathering and Christmas party. Members heard a Bible reading and prayers, approved sending a clothing box to Nurse Haag for Mexican descent families, and installed new officers. Hostesses Mrs. Gus Fisbeck and Mrs. Walter Haas decorated the hall with holly, favors, and tapers. The next meeting is January 18 with Mrs. Frank Biehunke and Mrs. Walter Hildebrandt as hostesses.
