The Moulton Eagle reports seventeen new subscriptions and urges residents to support local business. It promotes home buying, Christmas gift subscriptions, and planned softball league efforts to attract newcomers and sustain the town’s economy.
A town Christmas program promoting free enterprise and individual rights is sponsored by the American Legion Post VFW Post Knights of Columbus Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Santa Claus will arrive to dis car fly gift packages in a program starting at 7:00 PM.
The Moulton Fire Department burned the grass along Front Street in the downtown area as a precaution on Sunday morning. Firefighters with the booster truck stood by to prevent the fire from gaining momentum and praised the department for eliminating a potential fire hazard during the dry spell.
The Moulton Eagle solicits greetings for the Christmas edition out December 22 and the New Year edition on December 29. If anyone was overlooked, call 99 or visit The Eagle Office to submit requests.
Miss Christina Lev died of a heart attack at Sanatorium on Thursday December 7. Funeral services were at Smith Funeral Home Chapel Flatonia and Praha Catholic Church with Rev Petra officiating. Interment followed at Praha Catholic Cemetery. Casket attendants were Frank Zamykal Frank Lev Louis Lev Emil Lev Charles Lev and Franklin Lev. Born Praha June 5 1910 she was 40 years 6 months 2 days old. She lived in Moulton two years before moving to Sanatorium four months ago. Survived by brother Frank Lev and three sisters Sister Regina Lucy Lev and Mrs Mary Vahalik.
The San Antonio Light reports Army Private Manuel G. Reyes, a Moulton native and Lanier High School alumnus, was killed in Korea on July 27 after being listed missing in action. He joined the Army on October 9, 1949 and had been sent to Okinawa before Korea. Survived by his mother Felipa Reyes and eight siblings in San Antonio.
The University of Texas reports a record 332 foreign students this fall. Iraq leads with 36 sponsored by government programs and studying engineering, followed by 36 from China many not residents. Mexico has 33 with 19 citizens and residents, Turkey 21, and Colombia 15. About a third come from Latin America and other regions including Alaska and the Canal Zone are represented.
Moulton hosts nine visiting teams December 15 and 16 as part of the fifth annual tournament. Sheridan is favored, with Waelder Moulton Schulenburg as strong contenders for the district crown. Friday features Waelder versus Sheridan with consolation bracket implications. Schulenburg looms as a veteran threat. Finalists in prior tournaments were Moulton and Waelder. the event could crown a five year champion. Session times and admission 20 to 35 cents. William Batey coaches the Bobkatz.
Army reservists ordered to active duty may delay departure to January 5 1951. Texas Military District Chief Colonel C M Culp said delays apply to those not requesting earlier reporting between December 16 and January 1. Overseas reporting deadlines and ports of embarkation remain unchanged.
E R Peck U S Navy captain informs Jimmie B Pyland’s parents in Memphis that on November 17 1950 he graduated from the Aviation School Class A with top honors. The letter notes training in catalogs equipment materials typing calculating devices procurement receipt stowage and safety factors and commends the student as a credit to the school.
Navy recruiter in Victoria Texas announces two major enlistment changes. Dependency restrictions lifted for men with no prior service who have at most one dependent. No restrictions for veterans discharged as Seaman or higher. Qualification test passing grade lowered and previously failed entrants may now be accepted. Dependents may receive up to 85 dollars monthly.
The Moulton St. Joseph 4 H Club met on Thursday December 7 with full attendance. Miss Worth demonstrated custard preparation and sewing was announced as the main topic for the January meeting.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed twelve stacks of feed at the Victor Hermes Place near Kamensky School on Saturday afternoon. The Moulton Fire Department arrived and saved one stack of feed and possibly some buildings. Mr Hermes suffered heavy losses.
Christmas program sponsored by Geier Merrem Post 392 Americal Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6971 Moulton Lions Club Knights of Columbus and the Moulton Chamber of Commerce. Santa Claus will be present to distribute gifts to children. The program includes band numbers choir selections and other numbers with Mayor E C Fehrenkamp delivering an address and the Lutheran Choir and Moulton School Band performing. Santa arrives and gift packages are distributed.
A February draft call for 2,559 men was announced by State Selective Service Director Paul L. Wakefield, 522 more than January. Local boards will compile February quotas after year’s start. Texas has 15,084 men called since the Korean War. About 7,500 registrants will undergo pre induction exams next month to prepare for March and beyond.
Tomato growers are invited to demonstrations of three transplanters the John Deere Holland and Benis models. The shows run Friday December 15 at 2 00 PM at the Tomato Disease Laboratory Yoakum and Saturday December 16 at 2 00 PM in Hallettsville with a farm visit afterward.
Mr. and Mrs. I. G. Janca and L. G. Janca Jr. lead about thirty Austin Square Dance Club members by special bus to Rawleigh North Carolina. They were invited by the Rawleigh Square Dance Club which will provide transportation and lodging. Mrs. Janca is sister to Mrs. Malvin Merrem and Mrs. Weldon Knape of Moulton.
Gordon James, manager of the San Antonio social security office, announces a field visit to Yoakum at City Hall at 8:00 A M on Wednesday December 20. The rep seeks seniors 65 and older whose prior old age insurance claims were rejected for insufficient work. The amended law allows six quarters of coverage since 1936 for eligibility. James urges affected individuals to file new claims under the new law.
Sgt Bennie Hafernik of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge for satisfactory performance of duty in ground combat near Seoul. He is the brother of John Hafernik of Moulton and Mrs. Viola Vrazel of Yoakum. He formerly lived in Moulton.
The Bobkatz opened with a 41 to 24 win over Bal High of Galveston in Bryan last Friday and Saturday. They then lost to Bryan 55 to 45 in the second game of the cage tournament.
The Komensky PTA held its regular meeting on Friday December 8. The treasurer reported the Thanksgiving picnic profit exceeded $600. The group plans a Christmas program for Friday December 22 at 7:00 pm and invites the public to attend and meet Santa Claus.
A study using fifty years of U S Weather Bureau data finds Texas brighter than Florida in both December January and June with 150 200 hours versus 200 225 in Florida for winter and 300 350 hours for Texas next June. Researchers note shaded windshields cut infrared and ultraviolet rays while preserving daylight and visibility.
Governor Allan Shivers leads a statewide push as the Governor's Fight Polio Committee mobilizes 150 volunteers to close a $300000 treatment deficit. The public drive centers on the 1951 March of Dimes January 15 to 31 with emphasis on large donations to fund patient care and polio research.
Mr A J Tubeville and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a reception at home in Yoakum. They have two children, Mrs E L Stephens of Mexico City and S A Tubeville of Ennis, Texas. He was born in Flatonia and married Marie Sherman of Houston in 1900, and they have lived in Yoakum since 1903.
