Barter Theater Founding Marks Virginia Cultural Milestone
Abingdon's Barter theater rose from wartime hardship in 1933 offering produce in exchange for tickets. Porterfield built a national model by trading bed and board for actors and supplies, growing into a state subsidized company with 154 plays and 1,000 performances. The project aims to expand regional tours and revive consumer supported drama.
