Beaumont Texas August 27 two men die while attempting to close a wild oil well at Spindle Top. Efforts to remove a four inch drilling pipe failed and a seven man rescue team collapsed from gas and oil spray. The well continues to spout oil as rescue attempts continue with no success.
Mrs Silas Dodd wife of the Schooner Eliza Scribner captain reports a harrowing night after the vessel struck a wreck off Fire Island Beached she and her husband provisioned a small boat and she held a knife as he urged her to cut the tow line All night she survived in the boat awaiting life savers rescue as the schooner slowly sank
Louisville hosts Knights Templar and ladies as trains bring an estimated 50 000 visitors. Informal reunions and escorts mark the day while the grand commandery of Kentucky and state commanderies prepare a reception at the city cus tomhouse to honor officers and members.

An expert diver works to close the well as the field faces rising demand and a major oil and fuel contract expands shipments via the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe railroad with Higgins Oil and Fuel company tallying a minimum 2 000 000 barrels in the next year and Santa Fe preparing to burn Beaumont oil in locomotives. The industry notes freight rate cuts and booming orders as production surges.
An elderly man died yesterday in Tarrytown from starvation and neglect after living alone for over fifty years. Bank books show deposits near $5000 and valuables are believed hidden around the house. He immigrated from England in 1849.
The Panama Steamship Company’s steamer Orizaba sails for Colon carrying large cases believed to contain munitions of war for rebels in the Cacua department on Colombia’s Pacific coast. Arms expected to reach Buena Ventura via railway and an English steamer.

Ed Mortimer, a 60 year old miner from Seattle, was reportedly kidnapped in Daw son and lowered into a deep shaft on Thisle Creek seventeen miles from Dawson. Captors demanded $600, but Mortimer had no money and they left him to die. After twelve hours of effort he climbed to the surface, wandered eight miles, and a canoeist brought him to Dawson where he sought police protection.

A mob of about one hundred gathered near the federal jail in Fort Smith Arkansas to lynch Lewis Smith a Negro accused of assaulting the 7 year old daughter of a Frisco road employee. The crowd dispersed after learning breaking into the United States jail would be dangerous and without a clear leader the demonstration ended at 3 o clock this morning.
Reports from Zapata County Texas describe severe famine as range water fails and cattle die. Cactus plants are the only green growth visible while relief efforts by Mayor Hicks struggle to meet needs. Rail developments in Waco are advancing with plans to open offices and run trains after track completion.
Cleveland dispatch says J P Morgan & Co will hire Charles M Hays as railroad expert ahead of possible presidency in Morgan led combinations. Hays follows Samuel Spencer’s path from Southern Pacific to leadership in a Morgan backed railway venture.
The Ch ee Sik Leet company applied to the Kansas corporation board to build or operate a railway line in the state with capital stock of 4 million dollars. It plans a northward route from Geary in Bailie County to connect with the Santa Fe in Woodward or Woods counties and then south along Kansas to a terminus at Kiowa Anthony or Caldwell.
The third death from yellow fever in the commission's mosquito experiments occurred at 6:30 PM. Miss Clara Maas of New Jersey died seven days after illness began. three of six bitten have died, others show light symptoms. Maas was a nurse at Las Animas and sought immunity. The Baptist general convention will meet in Fort Worth in November.
The decomposed body found near Coppe Island by two youths in a sailboat is believed to be W. G. Colby of Dallas Texas. A steerage ticket from Toy Steamship Line was found with the clothing and suggests he was lost from a vessel traveling from New York to Boston. The body had been in the water about ten days.
August 26 in Beaumont Texas Gusher No 34 of Merchants and Mechanics Oil Company tops the field. Head Driller G B Speed anchored the eight inch casing and bailing began about 10 am. The well discharged gas oil and rock for over ten minutes flooding the derrick floor before the gate valve closed.
The deed transferring the entire Austin and Northwestern railroad property to the Houston and Texas Central Rail Road Company was filed in the county clerk's office. The Central assumes all debts and liabilities except restricted deemed indebtedness, with no cash consideration named. All agents and officers of the Austin and Northwestern have been notified of the change.
Nashville August 26 guards eight officers six men under arrest for being members of the mob that lynched Charles Davis at Smithville two weeks ago. Prisoners brought to ville and jailed. Names: John Given Aaron Hughes John Given Jr Lou Given Tom Given and Edgar Clark. All but Clark are relatives of Kate Hughes the 15 year old whom Davis is charged with assaulting.
Boston and New York swimmer Peter S. McNally plans a 400 mile voyage from Boston to New York starting next Sunday. He aims to reach The Battery before noon on September 30, within thirty days. The true distance is 282 3 4 nautical miles, the course about 400 miles.
