Congressmen Clark W. Thompson Letter on Farm Policy and Travel
In a Texas district letter, Congressman Clark W. Thompson discusses cotton and wheat allotments, price supports, and skepticism about alternatives to the farm program. He appeals for open dialogue, notes his planned district travel before the next Congress, and invites constituents to write to him in Galveston.
Texas Water Use Shocks Farm Profits in Texas
The Texas farm economy suffers as only 15 percent of potential water is utilized while 85 percent drains to the Gulf. Irrigated land, about 3.7 million acres, yields 40 percent of farm income, with two thirds depending on groundwater that is dwindling. A shift to surface water irrigation could add up to a million acres, meeting industrial and municipal needs and boosting national food supply. Federal state cooperation is urged to replace groundwater with reliable surface sources to avert long term declines in production. Personal: Clarence Kalischko and family visited. J C Short, Johnnie, and Fred Pietsch in San Antonio. James Janecka and children stayed with Ed Wenske. Marcos trip documented.
