Drought Strains Central Texas Deer Populations
Drought reduces available forage across Central Texas with deer losses tied to malnutrition. A ranch near Austin reported up to twenty carcasses, including a velvet antlered five pointer. An autopsy by Texas A&M pathologist Dr. R D Turk confirmed starvation despite stomachs full of inedible material. Younger deer are hit hardest as migration declines and blighted ranges linger.
