Grandmother blocked as DISD requires court custody for school

Doris Taylor faces a custody hurdle after taking care of Jerry eight, Michael seven, and Anita six. Though Judy Taylor gave a notarized temporary custody statement, DISD demands a court order for permanent custody before enrolling the children. Legal Aid notes many relatives in similar bind, since state residence rules hinge on court ordered guardianship. The children have new shoes but few chances to start Monday without a custody decree.

Pension eligibility for vet pensioners

Eligible for VA pension based on need are widows, widowers and minor children of war veterans who died of non service connected causes. The amount of pension is determined by annual income with no payments to surviving spouses, with children, whose annual income is in excess of 4500 dollars. Applications should be made to any VA office or service officers of veterans organizations. Almost a million widows and 797000 children receive pension from VA despite death not being service related. Many may be eligible according to VA official Ted W. Myatt. Children’s eligibility is sometimes overlooked when the mother is not eligible due to income, remarriage or divorce prior to death. There are no income limits on survivor benefits when death resulted from military service. The possible eligibility of all survivors is reviewed by VA on death notification, but circumstances around death may not identify all survivors.
