Galveston reports the aftereffects of a historic hurricane with the sea wall proving its worth in protecting the island city. A death list exists but specifics are incomplete in the readable text.
A two day hurricane thrashed the Gulf Coast causing massive property damage and loss of life. Galveston reports nine dead, vast warehouse losses, and seawall damage while Texas City and Houston endure ruined docks, tangled bridges, and scattered fires.
In a mass meeting Galveston officials and citizens praised the seawall's performance during an 18 hour West India hurricane. Wind reached 90 miles per hour and only limited property loss and few deaths were reported, seen as proof of protective works' invincibility. Mayors and signatories pledge continued diligence and strength.
During Col. Theodore Roosevelt's visit to the San Diego exposition an Indian baby born two hours earlier was christened Theodore Roosevelt. The colonel attended the ceremony saying, This is the finest Indian boy I ever looked at. The photo shows the mother Hania Trujile, an Acoma, holding the infant as Roosevelt admires it.
