In Tyler Texas on August 18 Silas Alexander fatally wounded John Mayfield with a 22 caliber public safety item after a dispute over a nickel during a craps game by the roadside. Both men are described as colored. Mayfield surrendered and is jailed in Tyler.
Beverly S. Warden, arrested after forcing a street car to stop with a revolver when no car would take him, was acquitted in police court. Judge Tracey warned motormen to avoid passenger refusals and to enforce court limits on fines.
In Kirbyville Texas yesterday evening Earnest Horn and Will Kimbell fought. Horn was fatally wounded by a knife just over the heart and died about seven hours later. Kimbell surrendered to the constable.

In Belton Texas on August 18 Chester Morgan, 18, living near Sparta, tried to light a fire with kerosene. The can exploded burning the house and contents and Morgan is said by doctors to be near death from severe burns.
In Helsinki area on Lake Tykojarvi an upper deck collapsed on a church ferry yesterday. Forty people were drowned or killed and many others injured in the disaster.
Nacogdoches Texas August 15 C W Harvey a local farmer planted fifty cents of onion seed and sold fifty dollars worth of onions from the crop demonstrating a remarkable return on a tiny initial investment.
Austin dispatch notes Camp Mabry preparations for mobilization starting the next day with the Seventeenth United States Battery arriving from Fort Sam Houston. Gen Grant and staff will visit. a grand sham battle is planned for Monday August 24 with detailed weeklong camp activities outlining drills, outposts, reconnaissance, night postings, and assault scenarios.
The first bale of the new crop for Colorado county was grown by John Foyt near Shimek and ginned by Barton and Janek. It weighs 562 pounds net and was bought by merchant Jno. Barta at 12 1 16 cents, then shipped to Gust Heye and Co. in Galveston. Last year Weimar shipped over 1000 bales by August and 3000 by September 1, with the current crop running about thirty days late.
Fall River Massachusetts reports a curtailment next week affecting 540000 spindles for the full week and about 450000 spindles for part of the week. Fourteen mills will be wholly idle and about 5000 operatives affected.

In Wheeling West Virginia early today 300 striking machinists clashed with 25 non union workers at United States Steel River side plant. About 1000 shots fired many wounded including spectator Clay Hoover and Peter Silatek. Police failed to stop rioting before dawn.
Taylor Texas August 17 A Williams county grand jury warrant led to the arrest of S R Sheffield a married man with wife and child on a charge of criminal assault alleged to have occurred months ago near Liberty Hill. He was taken in irons to Georgetown jail by Sheriff Sampson Connell with wife and child present. Sheffield had driven a milk wagon in Taylor for four months.
East bound local freight No 28 on the Texas Pacific trans continental division wrecked two and a half miles west of Sherman last evening. Ten cars of merchandise and two empties went through a thirty foot bridge. The engine and two cars passed over safely while the caboose and four cars remained on the opposite side. Cars were demolished and merchandise strewn for several hundred feet with telegraph lines broken.
Memphis Tenn August 17 The grand jury Saturday returned sixty four indictments against hotel keepers saloonists and grocerymen charged with operating steel machines for gambling purposes. The indictments stem from a reform crusade in the city.
Naples reports the Vesuvius eruption has intensified with lava streams splitting into two branches. The longer flow extends about 2500 feet toward Ottajano and the other about 2300 feet toward Pompeii. No immediate danger is noted.

ML Hill owner of a barber shop at 103 Lawrence street Dallas committed death by own action today by drinking carbolic acid in a glass of beer at his home. His wife had taken their three children to relatives in Richardson yesterday, leaving him despondent.
