A terrible blast on Locust Street above Tenth in Philadelphia leveled five of six buildings. Up to twenty killed, many injured, with fires racing through debris. Rescue crews and volunteers aided amid chaos as hospitals filled with the injured.
Comptroller of the Currency Dawes releases figures on national banks showing 665 banks formed in 16.5 months after the March 1901 act with $35,267,000 capital and $10,006,200 bond deposits. In the South 158 banks began with $8,453,000 capital, 102 small and 56 larger. By July 21 the total banks rose to 2427 with $650,556,096 capital.
Port Townsend reports a death by starvation in the Agiapug mining district after 43 days of hardship. Miner George Dean died. companions Jack Houston and Joseph C Thiery faced death, with reports they severed and cooked a thigh from their dead partner before rescue arrived. Houston expected to survive. Thiery’s outlook was grim. Dean left a farewell letter to family in Canton Ohio. Houston formerly sailed as mate on the Yukon river boat Sovereign.
The Waters Pierce Oil Co. filed an anti trust affidavit July 3 with Secretary of State in Austin. A letter from J D Johnson its general attorney cited an oversight and said action would wait for Attorney General Bell upon return. A dispute is expected to settle amicably. In New York Louis Helpern, a South African immigrant, killed himself after a prior Brooklyn Bridge attempt by swallowing carbolic acid and leaping from a tenement.
The Beaumont oil field adds two gushers this afternoon bringing total wells producing to twenty. Guffey No. 4 and Yellow Pine Company No. 1 sit close together. Guffey 4 inch pipe set and connected to pipeline while Yellow Pine No. 6 inch well sits on an acre bought by local investors. Manhattan well continuing work on casing to shut off sand and water with a possible finish tomorrow.
Pittsburgh August 7 Shaffer issues union strike call across United States Steel mills. Amalgamated leaders foresee vast losses, potential bloodshed, and widespread idle men after August 10 mills turn. National Grocery combine planned. Texas legislature meets. deportations and arrests in Tampa strike. wells delayed in Beaumont. a double fatal shooting near Marlin. and land claims filings open in Indian Territory.
Bank in Austin Texas closed by special examiner William L. Yerkes and placed in receivership. Officials decline comment while depositors withdraw. state treasurer and secretary of state concerns discussed, but no concrete figures given on deposits or assets.
Cronberg reports the death of the German dowager empress causes widespread mourning. Flags fly at half mast as locals discuss the tidings and troops flood Oberurezel a strategic midway halt between Hamburg and Cronberg. Blue Hussars with lances march through the town.
The body of Henry St. John Waggaman was found in his bathroom with a 44 caliber pistol ball in his breast. He had long been associated with the jewelry firm of J. L. Mitchell and was a well known Houston figure. The bullet entered near the heart and death was nearly instant.
Corpus Christi Texas August 5 A new daily paper the Daily Eagle will debut next Monday editor and proprietor Abner Eubank will publish from the Texas Sun office This will be the fifth publication in the city joining The Caller Texas Sun Gulf Coast Churchman and Corpus Crony

Thousands seek new claims across the border. vigilante talk and Fort Sill soldiers observe a tense, desperate scene as hopefuls flood into the unsettled town.
John J. Moore and his wife were assaulted by masked men in an orchard near Chinnati Ohio and bound with revolvers forced to Salt Creek. They were threatened with death to stay silent and later walked home exhausted. Dr. Helton treated their injuries.
