News of a La Porte moonlight excursion wreck near Pasadena Houston area reports an engine derailment after a cow tangled in the pilot. Engineer Connor and many passengers escaped unharmed with one fireman reported killed and another passenger J A McIntosh severely injured or dead.

Mrs Emily Piggott and her son Charles G S Piggott arranged messages to be sent from Garfield Avenue while S Piggott and the father aboard the whaleback ship Columbus observed the reception. The system requires no transmission poles and uses timing to resist interference, with the receiver on deck and the transmitter in a house room.

Geneva Ohio August 1 Walter Harvey a blacksmith shot and killed E F Gleason at Harper's Field near Geneva. The shooting followed years of ill feeling Gleason chased Harvey into a house and threatened to whip him when Harvey seized a shotgun and fired killing Gleason instantly. Harvey, 60, was locked up. Gleason was 36.

An investigation by the sheriff and coroner found the body not clearly identified and it had evidently floated downstream. Some trainmen say they distinctly saw the arm though identification remains uncertain.
The Public Ledger reports Charles M. Schwab will resign as president of United States Steel, with the action in the hands of the executive committee. Rumors of resignation had circulated for months but were denied by Schwab and the directors.

Hartford City Indiana August 4 A dead end collision occurred yesterday morning between a westbound Panhandle freight and an eastbound passenger train injuring sixteen people with several reported as possibly dying. Dense fog limited visibility to about fifty feet as the freight flagman warned and jumped to safety. Both engines were reversed but momentum could not be checked.
Antonio Turckowski a Polish immigrant was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing prison. He declared his innocence in the murder of Brooklyn saloon man John Shepoloski committed March 6 for which he had been convicted. The interval from sentence to execution is noted as the shortest in state records.
Lexington reports that Dora Clay Brock, former wife of General Cassius M. Clay, produced a second will dated March 28 1901. On August 3 in Bar Harbor Maine the war game begins at daylight with the battleships Indiana Texas Massachusetts and destroyers Lawrence and Whipple under Admiral J P Sands sailing to the Atlantic. Two days later the fleet will deploy along the coast to observe the enemy as Admiral Barker commands from the Kearsarge equipped with wireless telegraphy.
A cloudburst yesterday flooded lowlands and valleys from near Lindsborg northwest of Ellsworth. The valley northwest of Lindsborg is underwater and Bavaria reports water one to two feet deeper than in the recent flood. In Carneo streets flooded and water reached the Union Pacific depot platform.
Somerset Kentucky reports a head on collision between two Queen and Crescent double header freight trains between Cumberland Falls and Greenwood. Six men killed and two injured. Firemen Joseph Phillipps Frank Steber and Walter Walters among the dead, plus an unidentified man.
George A. Tarler a New York jewelry salesman arrested by Collector R W Dowe faced a hearing before Commissioner Warrington. He was held over to the federal grand jury in 1500 dollars bond posted and he was released.

Corydon Ind Aug 3 Benjamin Gordon and George Ems were instantly killed by a lightning strike yesterday afternoon. Both men, living several miles apart, died within moments of each other while with their families watching the same storm.
