Rural red light stops frequent Virginia highway crashes
In Natural Bridge Virginia a red traffic signal guards a 90 foot span of the Natural Bridge across a 215 foot gorge on Highway 11. The device flashes red if speed exceeds 25 mph and will not turn green until slowing. Since installation two years ago accidents dropped from 28 in 10 years with 12 fatalities to none at the warning point. The system uses underground wires and a detector arm 280 feet away. Officials plan similar safeguards at other danger zones.
