Traffic Fatalities Spur Call for Stricter Travel Rules
Officials urge tougher regulations after continued traffic deaths highlight the peril of modern motor travel. Government bodies and safety groups press for comprehensive measures to reduce endangerment on roads and protect pedestrians and drivers alike.
Background of brutality cited in foreign policy debate
The piece contrasts American views of the Russian and Nazi mindsets with a psychologist’s claim that brutality shapes national character. It also reports the Agriculture Department finding that blizzards through February 1 killed 81,000 cattle and 97,000 sheep across South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado, totaling 2 percent of cattle and just over 5 percent of sheep. It argues civil rights cannot be legally compelled and warns such enforcement risks social harm.
