Polio vaccine may be produced in hen eggs
Lederle Laboratories researchers at American Cyanamid use over 14 million eggs yearly to grow modified live virus vaccines. They have demonstrated growth of a polio virus strain in hen eggs, a step toward egg based production, with vaccines already in use for dog distemper, rabies, mink distemper, and poultry diseases. The process involves drilling a tiny shell hole, injecting live virus, sealing, and incubating to multiply, then harvesting before hatching.
