Merchant Marine Academy trains fighting officers in wartime
The United States merchant marine cadet corps at Kings Point trains cadets for sea duty and war. Cadets have served on every landing and invasion operation, with seven earning distinguished service medals. Many have been killed or forced to abandon ship, while others saved shipmates and endured long lifeboat stays. Notable cadets include Louie Wood Jr. and John Steedley Jr. who survived D Day actions and a later ship loss. Dudley, Wood, Steedley and Thomas Jr. are highlighted for bravery and sea service in Guadalcanal and Normandy.
