Pope John Paul I dies after 34 day reign

Vatican City reports the death of Pope John Paul I at age 65 from a heart attack ending a 34 day papacy. He was found in his private Vatican apartment around 11 p.m. while reading. thousands mourners lined St. Peter's Square and leaders expressed condolences, including President Carter.

Theft probe follows man’s death in Marseilles car crash

Morris police pursue a theft case tied to Gregory Lipka’s death after Marseilles police report four men, close friends of Lipka, searched the wrecked MG and removed items from his car and apartment. A stereo, Marantz turntable, Pioneer tape deck, about 200 records and 20 tapes were taken. Lipka, 20, died from head injuries Aug. 11 at St. Francis Hospital Peoria after a crash on Aug. 10 on the Illinois River bridge. A $500 reward remains for return of the items.

Corn Festival Adds Attractions This Weekend in Grundy County

Tom Dzuryak announces added events for the 30th Grundy County Corn Festival including Telepuppets in Chapin Park around 2 p.m. after the Kiddie Parade, Garfield Goose performances, Bo Jay the Clown appearances, and a 7 p.m. fireworks show. Morris Roadrunners host the first annual 13 miler Sunday morning with 8 a.m. start and registration at the Grundy County Courthouse.

Corn Festival Express to Run Weekend Parade Circuit

Forecasts call for mostly cloudy skies and a bit warmer conditions with possible showers tonight and Saturday. The Corn Festival Express will shuttle festival-goers between Liberty and Main Streets and Hornsbys with a 50 cent fare on Saturday on a circuit visiting Art Show Horseshoe Tourney Corn Grain and Flower Show Flea Market Hobby and Handicraft Photo Show and back to the Art Show. Passengers can board at any stop and ride a single show to the next with a total up to one dollar. The map of weekend events and Express route will be published in the Morris Daily Herald before the festival.

Fire destroys house near Plattville

A two story frame house on Brisbin Rd near Plattville was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin discovered in an outside wall around 1 p.m. Owners Mr and Mrs Robert Grindle escaped with no injuries as Plattville Lisbon Yorkville and Minooka fire crews fought the blaze for several hours.

Parade Route Traffic Rules Announced by Morris Police

Morris Police Chief Jack Kopczick ordered all vehicles off the parade route by 1 p.m. Sunday or they will be towed. Afterward, cars must proceed west of Liberty Street to Fulton Street and then north toward U.S. 6 Illinois 47 and Interstate 80, with no left turns off Division Street toward Liberty Street after the parade.
