Grundy County Corn Festival Parade Draws Thousands
About 15 000 to 18 000 people lined Washington and Liberty Streets for Grundy County’s bicentennial parade. Despite damp weather the three day festival drew large crowds with 30 units cancelled and 22 bands plus 30 floats among entries.

Trucker Dies After One-Vehicle Crash Near Yorkville
Lynn Leifheit 29 of Yorkville died after a late Saturday crash on Illinois 71 west of 47. His truck left the road, overturned down an embankment, and he was thrown from a window. He died at Copley Memorial Hospital. Kendall County notes it as the tenth traffic fatality.

Carbondale Stabbing After Ride Refusal Sparks Investigation
Police continued a probe into a weekend stabbing at University Mall in Carbondale. Driver Melody Benz, 23, was stabbed in the chest and back with a knife and listed in serious condition at an Evansville hospital. Companion Meredith Taylor, 31, was stabbed in the back and listed in good condition at a Carbondale hospital. The assailant is described as a white man, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with black hair, blue jeans, and a reddish striped shirt.

Kiddie Parade Crowds Enjoy Light Rain and Creative Entries
A drizzle did not dampen spirits as children and parents filled the streets for the Kiddie Parade. Winners covered corn festival and Bicentennial themes with prizes ranging from 2.50 to 7.50 for entries such as Indian with corn, corn wagon, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, a Bicentennial birthday cake, and group costumes, with sponsors from the Women of the Moose and judges listed.

The Grundy County Corn Festival wrapped Sunday night at Morris Community High School with a 13 star bicentennial flag salute and a fireworks finale. A three day event featured corn displays, marching units Joliet West and Plainfield High, The Men of Brass Drum and Bugle Corps, Civil War mock battles, and festival button drawings with numbers listed for prizes.
