1966 Corn Festival crowns King and Queen of the Fair
Mark Esgar of Rte 1 Gardner won the Corn Festival title and Mrs. Oscar Osmanson of 1015 Union St was named Queen of the Corn Festival at the Corn Grain and Flower Show held on Liberty Street. The show drew 102 entries, with top marks in corn bread, rose and chrysanthemum displays, and numerous 4-H awards across crops flowers and youth contests.

Gardner Fire Department won the 1966 Corn Festival water fights after defeating Dwight Fire Department in the finals. Consolation prize went to Custer Park Township, who beat Morris in the losers’ playoff. Dwight claimed second place by beating Morris in the opener. Gardner then won the second playoff against Custer Park. Custer Park shut Morris out in consolation.

Corn Festival Kiddie and Pet Parade Draws Big Crowd
A large turnout watched the Kiddie and Pet Parade at the Corn Festival on Saturday. Winners included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Most Original, Harvest Puppys for Best Theme, and Cowsgirl for Best Costume and Pony, with entries from Donna Enger et al and Kenny Cren shaw among others. Batman and Robin, rumored as Charles Sarti and John Gilbertson, rode the Batbike. Judges were Mary Pfaff Hattie Cusimano Marge Barry and Beatrice Baker.

Teenage crash kills 13 year old girl in Harvey
A car packed with teenagers, stolen from a Harvey dealer, slammed into a building and a tree injuring and killing a 13 year old girl. Police said the driver panicked when a squad car approached as the vehicle sped away from the scene. The victim was identified as Evan Copprne of Robbins, a suburb south of Chicago.

Cracker Box Derby Thrills At Corn Festival Race
Twenty six entrants ages grade school built cars race down a wooden ramp in two attempts each. Wrecks occurred but no injuries. Ron Lavarier, 12, won first prize with a 2.042 second time. Randy Reynolds, 9, took second in 2.047 seconds with “The Panther.”
