Grundy County Corn Festival Parade Draws 10000 Plus Crowds
The 23rd annual Morris parade drew over 10,000 along an eight block downtown route. A record number of floats attracted praise as spectators endured light drizzle and 61 degree temperatures. Festival fireworks end Grundy Festival at Morris High field
Fireworks display led by Walter White at Morris Community High School field capped the Grundy Festival drawing about 5000 spectators. An array of shells and named effects followed a concert by the Great Lakes Naval Training Center Band and a festival queen presentation. Prize numbers for festival buttons were listed with amounts and claim deadlines. A Saturday night barbershop and Morris Sweet Adelines program drew 800 plus attendees at Center School auditorium. An 18 piece band led by Roger Hewett performed for adults at Morris Fire Station with sponsorship from the local union and Fire Department.

Three Stateville Penitentiary inmates George Sanders John Holmes Jr and William Bracy disappeared from the hospital visitors area in civilian clothes during a Sunday visit. Officials say hospital passes were used and gear was found in a wash room as a guard noted a possible sighting. A statewide manhunt was underway.

Two Class Crackerbox Derby Crowds at 23rd Corn Festival
In Gould Park the 23rd Corn Festival Crackerbox Derby mixed two classes with 55 entrants. Bud Bauer won conforming wheels in 19.35 seconds and seven year old Paul Tondini topped the regular soap box wheels at 15.02 seconds. About 450 spectators watched as cars, mostly home built, raced down a 286 foot track with gravity power.
