Corn Festival entries build toward 25th Grundy County event

Grundy County residents prepare for the 25th Grundy County Corn Festival with events on September 28 29 and 30. Crackerbox Derby co chairmen Harold Guehler and Jim Leonard expect 65 plus cars, with safety inspection and prizes for top finishes. The Kiddie Parade will feature 200 plus participants judged by the Women of the Moose. Floats in Civic Home Made and Professional categories are being organized by Chamber of Commerce volunteers. Volunteers are urged to contact the chamber at 942 0113 to help with photo shows and other activities.

Condemnation Trial Over 1.2 Acres Along U.S. 6 Near Morris

A Grundy County jury heard opening statements in a 1.2 acre condemnation case against land owned by Dean Briscoe along U.S. 6. The state seeks $3,500 based on eminent domain for road improvements while Briscoe seeks higher compensation reflecting overall farm value and damages to the remainder. Deadline Tight for Grundy Tax Second Installment

Grundy County taxpayers must submit the second installment at the county treasurer’s office by Friday or by noon Saturday at any county bank. Treasurer Pauline Coleman reports 55 percent received by Aug. 15. first distributions to taxing bodies start Sept. 29 with remainder in November. Affidavits for personal property taxes are still accepted, with sole ownership required for refunds.

Weather Outlook and Temperatures Through Thursday

Forecast calls for mostly sunny today with highs in the lower 70s and a not so cool night with lows in the mid 50s. Thursday should be mostly cloudy with highs in the lower 70s. Tuesday peaked at 78 degrees at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 50 degree low. At 7 a.m. today the temperature was 53 degrees and downtown Morris recorded 67 degrees at 10:25 a.m.

Minooka unit district petition filed under new Illinois bill

A new Minooka community school district petition was filed at 4 28 p m with Grundy County educator Arthur Meadors. Signed by 257 residents it covers land in Grundy Kendall and Will counties including areas of three current districts. Meadors will review the petition and the new bill before deciding on next steps.

Grundy County Board Approves Rezoning Near Morris

The Grundy County Board approved rezoning eight acres on the east side of Illinois 47, south of Morris, from agricultural to B II commercial for Bower Homes model homes. The session also authorized bids for a three quarter ton pickup and a squad car, approved a 112217 health department budget, and drew nine hundred jurors for the year.

Van overturns injuring driver in Grundy County crash

Loyal L. Collins, 57, of 1005 McCameron Street Lockport, was listed in satisfactory condition at Silver Cross Hospital Joliet after his Chevrolet van flipped into a ditch on Pine Bluff Road near Goose Lake Road. The crash occurred at 2 25 p m Tuesday when traffic ahead slowed to turn. Collins swerved left and the van tipped, spilling Fritos from the back. No tickets were issued.

Boy 2 Missing After Short Walk With Dog Leads to Search

Jeffery Stapleton age two from Plaza Drive Pebble Beach subdivision wandered off with his mixed breed Pewee, prompting a Morris Fire Department search. A neighbor located the boy about a half mile away near the Weaver residence in Hollenbeck's subdivision within ten minutes.

Students at Gardner-South Wilmington High School chose four candidates for Grundy County Corn Festival Queen. Denise Alderson Trudi Peterson Joy Granger and Patti Smolik, all from South Wilmington, with one later to be named queen during Friday Sept 28 Corn Festival events.
