Nixon lawyers urge reversal of Watergate tapes ruling
President Nixon’s lawyers ask an appeals court to nullify Judge John J. Sirica’s Aug 29 order to turn over Watergate tape recordings for private inspection. They argue Sirica lacked authority and that the ruling cites an unprecedented expansion of executive privilege. Archibald Cox counters that the order is not broad enough and that the grand jury should be guided by staff.
