Enrollment in Morris Schools Rises by 73 Pupils

Current enrollment in Morris eight public schools shows an increase of 73 students from last year. Total school enrollment is 2,124 with 1,312 in grades one through four and 812 at Morris Community High School.

Braceville Home Scorched by Fire

A Braceville shed behind the home of William Hake Jr. burned to the ground at 4 30 p m Wednesday. Cause given as spontaneous combustion. Discovered by the owner and neighbor William Tyler. Braceville Volunteer Fire Department responded but south end was scorched before flames were put out. The house had been recently purchased by Hake.

Local Bus Service Restores Morris Schools Transport

Varland Bus Service owner Russell Warland says buses will run for Morris grade and high school students this Monday. Routes schedules and fares match last year as driver shortages are resolved enabling service for all runs.

Ready Site for Improvements in Morris Downtown

Demolition of two houses at Main and Franklin in Morris was completed to clear a site for a downtown rehabilitation program. Grundy National Building Corporation plans parking and auto amenities, with remodeling of the bank lobby and 209-11 Liberty St. site. Dr. William E Walsh, longtime mayor and milk sickness researcher, once ran his office from the 319 Franklin St. property.

Explosion at Baraboo Powder Plant

An explosion at the Badger Ordnance Works south of Baraboo Wisconsin set the armament building ablaze. Witnesses report a large black smoke plume and several ambulances and police cars transporting injured persons to hospitals. The facility is operated by Olin Mathieson Co and was revived to produce ammunition for the Vietnam war.

Mild Weekend Forecast With Warm Afternoons

The U S Weather Bureau predicts fair tonight with a 50s low. Friday should be sunny and warmer with a low to mid 80s. Saturday looks fair and warm. Collins Station logged a Wednesday high of 77 and a low of 46. At 9 a m today Morris readings were 62 and at 11 30 a m downtown Morris reached 75.

Chicago Plans Two Renewal Programs

Mayor Daley announced two large urban renewal efforts for Chicago. The Roosevelt Halsted plan would cost 23 million, demolish 95 percent of nearby buildings, add up to 500 moderate rent units, expand the Chicago Circle campus, and replace Maxwell Street with a shopping center. A second study would affect a 48 square mile area west and south of the Loop, with broader scope and fewer specifics.

Corn Festival Buttons On Sale In Grundy County

The 1966 Grundy County Corn Festival buttons go on sale for 25 cents. Each button grants admission to shows on September 22 and 24 at Morris Community High School and the fireworks on the final night. Prizes include vacations valued at 300 and 200 dollars, a bicycle, and travel cash. Winners choose from resorts listed at the Corn Festival Chamber of Commerce office.

Salvation Army Pickup Notice for Morris Area

Salvation Army trucks will collect clothing bedding furniture and other donations next week. Place items on the parkway in view of drivers near homes. Pickup zones run Monday east of Liberty Street to Illinois Avenue and North Street Tuesday west of Liberty Street to the Rock Island railroad tracks. Wednesday covers area north of the tracks east of Liberty to the Rock Island and all areas north of the tracks. Rural residents may bring items to Kay Coal Co at Calhoun Street and Illinois Avenue.

House Burns in Kinsman Today

A Kinsman fire destroyed a house owned by Mr and Mrs Lester Jones at 3 45 am. The home across from the Catholic church held four school age children and Mrs Odessa Jones in a trailer in Goshen Indiana. Neighbors LeRoy Ryan and the Verona department fought the blaze. The cause remains unknown.

Village Chief Killed by V C Terrorists in Binh Hoa Attack

Viet Cong forces killed the village chief and several villagers at Binh Hoa 100 miles south of Saigon as part of a broad campaign to disrupt the impending Constituent Assembly election. Six others died nationwide in daylight raids. more than 20 were injured. A separate blast damaged U.S. warehouses. a mine near a Navy minesweeper failed to harm vessels. Premier Ky considered a possible bid for presidency as Thieu declines to run. Buddhist monks urged a poll boycott amid mounting security concerns. Allied casualties totaled 187 dead with 570 wounded for the week, as air power supported operations.

CODE program tests 2427 Grundy County students

Two thousand four hundred twenty seven students in fourteen Grundy County schools received free tuberculin skin tests on Tuesday as three testing teams visited Coal City and other districts. The drive aims to identify all undetected tuberculosis cases in a county wide family centered program.
