A two-vehicle collision on US 66 south of Dwight killed Frances Long 38 and her son Elton 13 as their 1972 Mercury struck a stalled truck. Samuel Long 49 and other children were injured and treated at St. James Hospital and St. Francis Trauma Center. James Hall 20, driver of the semi, was uninjured.

A three car crash at Kankakee and Division Streets in Coal City at 8 15 a m sent Diana Wills 19 of Coal City rear ending Susan Martin into Dwight Parker 56 of Elmhurst. Martin was in good condition at St Joseph Hospital Joliet. Other drivers unharmed. No tickets issued. Coal City Emergency Squad transported Martin to hospital.

Unpaid bill at Holiday Inn prompts police report

Three Monee Residents Slain in Cold Blooded Family Murder
Will County authorities report the killings of Stephen Hawtree 56 Judy Hawtree 53 and son Thomas 18 at their farm home two miles west of Monee. The victims were rousted at knifepoint and shot in the head between midnight and 1 a.m. The house was ransacked and a pistol was used. Coroner Willard Blood noted a neck wound on Thomas indicating he was forced down stairs. The Hawtree family includes two older sons Robert and James.
