North Korea holds three U S airmen as talks stall

North Korea demands an unconditional apology and a written assurance that the helicopter crew were on a criminal mission before releasing three U S airmen. The United States maintains the helicopter strayed into North Korea accidentally during a training flight with no weapons aboard. The captives are pilot W O Malcolm Loepke and crew members Capt David H Crawford and Spec 4 Herman H Hofstatter, all injured in the incident.

John Tyrrell age 60 a Mazon farmer is in fair condition at Morris Hospital after a Wednesday morning accident. He suffered severe cuts to his left hand when he caught it while cleaning a dryer blower at about 10 a.m. on his farm.

First Services For Church Here Sunday

Grace Baptist Church on High Street east of Illinois 47 in Morris will hold its first services Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Kenneth Dalton leads the church with temporary meetings in the Union Hall Building, owned by Local 292. The Daltons, with one child, will live in Morris as plans for a new sanctuary proceed.

Weather outlook with showers and warm humidity

The U S Weather Bureau forecasts showers or thundershowers tonight with a low in the upper 60s. Friday will be partly cloudy and warm with a chance of thundershowers and a high in the mid 80s. Collins Weather Station logged 84 high and 66 low on Wednesday, with 71 at 9 am and 73 downtown Morris at 11 am.

Youths Face Court Over Fatal July Crash Near Mazon

Five traffic citations dated Aug 20 were filed in the magistrate division over a July 23 crash two miles west of Mazon that killed Darryl W. Osmunson. Raymond Bannon 21 of Mazon drove a 1965 Dodge that hit Osmunson’s 1969 Oldsmobile. Bannon, Sproull 17, and Osmunson died in the fiery collision. Bannon and Sproull are to appear Sept 18.

Public meeting on state taxes and revenue

Ken McMillan of the Illinois Agricultural Association will speak on state and local government revenue at a special meeting about taxes at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Farm Bureau building. The event is open to the public and Farm Bureau members.

Hurricane Francelia Rips Guatemala Hills Coast

The hurricane struck Guatemala hills and southern British Honduras with winds near 110 mph and heavy property and crop damage. The National Hurricane Center warned rainfall up to 20 inches and high tides threatening coastal villages along the Gulf of Honduras. A Radio Belize spokesman cited widespread damage as Francelia moved ashore near Punta Gorda.

Priest Injured in One Car Crash Near East Brook lyn

The Rev Orville Munie 51 pastor of Sacred Heart Church Campus is at St Marys Hospital Kankakee with injuries after his 1965 Buick overturned on a gravel road two miles south of East Brooklyn at 410 pm Thursday A deputy sheriff said accelerator stuck and the car went into a ditch then overturned about 80 feet from the intersection resting on its left side in a cornfield Friends transported him to the hospital with no serious injuries recorded.

Record Rainfall Strikes New York and New Jersey

Helicopter Shot Down Across Cambodian Border Amid Clashes

U S and South Vietnamese troops clashed with enemy forces inside Cambodia after an American helicopter was shot down near Kien Tuong Province. One South Vietnamese and two enemy combatants died, two Americans and three South Vietnamese were wounded. AMAX Engineer Burns In Joliet Plant Accident

An AMAX engineer, Kes Stallions, 52, of 417 W Jefferson St, is in serious condition in the ICU at St Joseph Hospital Joliet after a hydraulic fluid line burst beneath him during inspection at the rolling mill area. He escaped after flames engulfed the equipment and was airlifted as his wife travels to join him. Stallions has 14 years with the company and no prior serious incidents.
