Grundy County plans swine flu immunization between October 15 and 25 with five county locations. Adults 25 plus may receive the vaccine, with ages 18 to 25 possibly eligible. Shots are voluntary and backed by state health officials and the Illinois Medical Society.
United Press International reports the start of summer’s last long weekend as police brace for heavy traffic. National Safety Council President Vincent Tofany estimates 13.1 billion miles will be driven and 360 to 460 fatalities with 15,000 to 18,000 injuries across the 78 hour period.
Illinois unemployment climbed 0.3 percent in August from 6.9 to 7.2 percent, driven by more job losses in the six-county Chicago region. Decatur's rate jumped from 8.2 to 10.1 percent amid a rubber workers strike, while Chicago added 10,700 unemployed to reach 232,400 in August.

The Taal volcano in the Philippines erupted today after a six year lull, blowing steam gas and volcanic ash as high as 5000 feet. Thousands of residents near the crater were likely affected by the eruption and ash fall.
The report cites fair tonight with near 50s, sunny Saturday and a 72 degree high Thursday at Dresden Island. It details mild but potentially intensifying eruption at Taal Volcano south of Manila with 2 000 to 3 000 island residents evacuated and four nearby villages cleared as a precaution.

Sheriff reports a black man about 50 burglarized two rural Gardner homes Thursday afternoon. About 700 dollars in cash, 190 dollars in checks, jewelry spared, and a purse were taken from Harold Seerup. Mary Ferguson lost money while the burglar fled in a dented rusted light colored car. A witness saw the suspect entering Ferguson residence and the car leaving northward.
Chicago area milk prices are set to jump seven to ten cents a gallon by Monday. The increase follows a sixty cent per hundredweight hike in raw milk costs from the Central Milk Producers Cooperative, blamed on raw milk costs, seasonal shortages and higher plant expenses. Retail prices have ranged from 1.29 to 1.61 per gallon, with the week ending Sept 1 averaging 1.51.
