Thousands in Thailand Turn Out for LBJ Welcome

Coal City Pedestrian Killed by Santa Fe Train at Crossing

A 93 year old Coal City resident Ludimuir Zajecek was struck at the Maple Street crossing by Santa Fe No. 19 as it traveled west at about 60 mph. He died at the scene and the crossing was described as unprotected. The death follows another pedestrian fatality at the same crossing three months earlier. The train's crew included conductor Louis Howard and engineer Hugh Kelley. The body was taken to Reeves Funeral Home.

Police Arrest 27 Joliet Youths

Police stopped 27 Lemont youths aged 15 to 20 along U S 66 as they drove five cars toward Joliet armed with clubs pipes and switchblades. They were held for court on mob action impeding traffic and unlawful weapons amid a planned gang clash.

Morris area UNICEF fund drive by children Sunday

About 400 grade school children from eight Morris churches will canvass neighborhoods for UNICEF starting 3 p.m. Sunday. Churches include Morris Methodist First Baptist Immaculate Conception Bethlehem Lutheran Assembly of God Free Methodist St Thomas Episcopal and First Presbyterian. Groups meet at their churches then split into eight sections.

Explosion North of Saigon Kills Two Americans

An ammunition dump 12 miles north of Saigon exploded causing a ball of fire and heavy casualties. Two American service men were killed and 10 wounded as fires spread and windows shattered in Saigon. The incident occurred near Long Binh with uncertainty over cause, injuring many and prompting road closures and aerial response.

Vandalism Reported in Mazon Area

Several vandalism incidents reported in the Mazon area over the past week. Four loads of corn dumped on the ground at the Mazon Elevator on Sunday and Monday nights. Four school windows broken at Mazon Township High School on Tuesday night. Report claims stop signs knocked down in area though not officially confirmed.

Pierce Defense Presents Case in Four Day Trial

In a four day Pierce versus Coal City Trucking Co case Judge Howard C. Ryan struck defense witness Gary Bjerke’s testimony as having no evidentiary value after a motion by Pierce’s lawyers. Gerald Allee of International Harvester testified value of the Coal City truck at about 7000 with a blue book of 4550 and a trade in of 2200, while repair estimates exceed 3900. The case asks 108000 for Pierce and 20000 for his wife with Coal City seeking 25000 for truck damage. eight witnesses and multiple exhibits were presented in court.

De Gaulle calls for Vietnamese settlement with U S withdrawal

President de Gaulle urged a Vietnamese settlement based on self determination and the withdrawal of American troops from Viet Nam. He said Washington must apply the self determination principle, halt bombing, and seek neutrality in Southeast Asia, questioning U S victory viability. United Fund Tops 21 000 Mark In Grundy County

The 1967 Grundy County United Fund charity has surpassed 21000 dollars, about 60 percent of its 35000 dollar goal. Campaign chair Tom Sheppard of Morris announced the progress as residential solicitation continues and other drives near completion.
