McHenry County sheriff announced five youths, including Gary Lee Campbell and Joseph M Shine, are charged with murder after a 20 to 25 pound rock shattered a truck windshield on U S 14 near Woodstock, killing driver David Klawes. Bonds set at 500000 each. last arrest at 3 30 a m. The incidents occurred Oct 19 20 and the rocks were taken as road markers from Stone Gate subdivision.
A major reorganization of the board of trustees for the Teamsters Central States funds was announced by executive director Daniel J. Shannon. Six new directors will be named, with October 29 slated as the announcement date. The move reduces the pension board from 16 to 10 members while health and welfare remains at six. The changes come as government agencies scrutinize fund investments and practices and after Shannon pushed for fund accounting and recovery efforts. Trustees say the board reforms aim to streamline governance amid changing economics and ERISA oversight.
Transkei, a Denmark-sized tract carved from South Africa, becomes Africa's newest independent state in a midnight ceremony marked by a 101 gun salute. Chief Kaiser Matanzima accepts independence while critics and the UN oppose it as a product of apartheid.
The Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa affirmed Grundy County Circuit Court's denial of post-conviction relief for Otha Dale Brown, 42, Vandalia, on forgery and escape convictions from 1974. The ruling keeps his five to 15 year prison term and a concurrent one to three year sentence in place. The decision also notes Brown’s post-conviction petition lacked proof of substantial constitutional violations and grants his counsel's withdrawal.
A theft estimate lists an 18 foot aluminum cruiser valued at 3000, a 115 horsepower Mercury motor worth 1000, and a boat trailer valued at 150 taken from the Robert Onsen residence on Mitchell Street between Friday and Monday. Deputy Maloney plans to interview neighbors as part of the investigation.
