Douglas Percy battle on open housing
Sen. Paul H. Douglas and his Republican opponent Charles H. Percy traded charges on open housing in their campaign for the Senate seat. Douglas accused Percy of duplicity by arguing to whites and Negroes, while Percy denied it and charged Douglas with using different material in Negro and white neighborhoods. Percy argued only one family homeowner exemption could make open housing workable, and said he supports freedom of residence.
