Labor Leader Arrested On Roma Bridge Demonstration

Eugene Nelson, a labor organizer, was arrested on the International Bridge at Roma after refusing to end a blockade of Mexican workers entering Texas. Deputies dragged him into a squad car as demonstrators blocked traffic and Mexican police moved onto the bridge to enforce passage back toward Texas.

Voter Registration Totals Rise Across Morris County Precincts

Nels P. Nelson reports 13 251 voters registered for the forthcoming general election in Grundy County. Compared to 13 260 two years ago, registrations are down by nine despite 76 absentee ballots. Felix precinct shows a 139 rise, while Morris eight precincts fall by 205. overall 4 430 listed this year versus 4 635 in 1964.

The Weather Bureau expects fair and cool tonight with a low in the upper 30s. Tuesday will be sunny and warmer with a mid 60s high. Wednesday looks fair and warmer. Blood drive seeks 100 pints in Grundy County

Mrs. John Harder of the Red Cross announces a bloodmobile visit Wednesday from 11 30 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. at First Methodist Church. The drive targets at least 100 pints to combat shortages caused by September cancelations with a need for O positive and O, A and B negative blood. Sweet Adelines coordinate appointments or walk ins accepted. prior donors cannot give.

Florida Killer Left No Clues Nor Motive

Florida Sheriff says the killer of education official Robert Sims and his 12 year old daughter Joy Lynn left no motive and no clues. Sims wife Helen was wounded and in critical condition. a 17 year old daughter Norma Jeannette found the bodies after returning from a football game. The family home was secured with bindings and blindfolds and a .38 caliber pistol believed weapon.

Speck Case Hearing Set to November 4

Chicago AP reports the murder case against Richard Speck, accused of killing eight student nurses, was continued in Criminal Court to November 4. Speck, 24, in a blue suit, appeared briefly before Judge Herbert C. Paschen as the eight nurses’ slayings on July 14 are referenced.

Truck Kills Girl in Illinois Driveway

Four year old Mona Lynn Branchfield of St. David Illinois was struck and killed when her father Richard Branchfield backed the truck after claiming the gears stuck in reverse. The accident occurred in the family driveway with the child playing nearby.

Residential United Fund drive seeks boost to 35 000

The 1967 Grundy County United Fund residential division opened with a 1 30 p m meeting at the Farm Bureau auditorium. Associate Circuit Judge Robert Malmquist said the division must raise more to reach the 35000 goal, noting work pledges are not to be contacted at home. The campaign combines budgets of the Red Cross and Community Chest groups including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4 H, Pleasant View Lutheran Home, Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army.

Seven Missing in Oil Tanker Fire Near Morgan City

Flames raged on the Gulf Stag a 572 foot tanker 60 miles southwest of Morgan City Louisiana as seven of its 40 crewmen remained missing. The Atlantc Prestige rescued 28 including Captain Larry La Rue while two others were saved by the Western Sun. Coast Guard crews aided three injured men, Paul Berry Wilton Guthrie and Jesse Jeffries, at a Morgan City hospital.

All Grundy County public schools will close Friday as teachers attend the 51st annual Illinois Valley division meeting of the Illinois Education Association at LaSalle-Peru Township High School. Over 2,000 teachers are expected. Arthur Meadors calls it official institute.

Selecting Panel For Pierce Case

Prospective Grundy County jurors gathered in court to hear the civil case Richard and Judith Pierce versus Coal City Trucking Co and Wilbert Dearth.
