A man and a woman in ski masks robbed Kneller's Standard service station at Interstate 80 and Ridge Road at 8 33 p m taking about 250 dollars. The Grundy County Sheriff's Department was alerted at 8 39 p m by Minooka police.
Weather update shows tonight fair and cold with lows in the 20s and a cool Friday with highs 45 to 55. A robbery investigation covers a black 1972 73 Chevrolet Nova described with no rear plate and suspects seen near Ridge Rd. Police from multiple agencies aided by Det. Lt. Ron Fox and others searched the area but found no vehicle.
A large floating crane lifted the George Prince ferry wreckage from the Mississippi River after a collision with the Frosta tanker. Officials say 22 bodies recovered, at least 56 missing, and up to 100 may have died.
The Morris Post Office will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lobby access and services but will not deliver city or rural mail. Incoming mail will be distributed on the holiday schedule, white star boxes will be picked up on Sunday and holiday schedule, and outgoing mail departs at 5 p.m. per Postmaster William Martin.
Bruce Banaszak, 33, of Plattville received two years probation after pleading guilty to reckless conduct stemming from a June 14 shooting at his home. Public Defender Max Peterson, 37, of Yorkville, was shot in the chest during the incident. Banaszak is barred from owning firearms during probation. grand jurors previously returned a no bill on attempted murder.
About 130 teachers in Streator Illinois walked out closing six elementary schools after the school board refused to allow a federal mediator in contract talks. The old contract expired August 15 and teachers stayed on the job until Wednesday. James Freehill said bargaining could resume anytime with a federal mediator.
Lester J. Anderson 57 of Gardner was seriously injured when his northbound 1972 Chevrolet pickup collided with a Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad freight train at Halkyard Lane crossing east of Morris. He was pinned, rescued by Morris Fire Department, and taken to St. Joseph Hospital Joliet. Train damage minor. truck demolished. Anderson works for O'Brien Construction. Authorities, including Sheriff William Button and detectives, investigated the 8:15 a.m. crash.

Republican Tom Corcoran challenged incumbent Tim Hall to a debate at a public forum hosted by the Grundy County groups and radio station. They sparred over energy policy, national health insurance, Social Security, grain reserves, tax reform, and congressional pay.
The Minooka Fire Protection District awarded Professional Construction Co. of Shorewood a 56 875 dollar contract to build a steel frame fire station on Mondamon Street beside the E J and E railroad. The 125 by 60 foot building will house equipment stalls and rest rooms with a 70 day completion target.
Incumbent James Reeves, 58, Democrat, faces Republican George Hendrickson, 44, in the November 2 general election. Reeves, a former Grundy County sheriff and part owner of Reeves funeral homes, has a wartime Air Force background and local ties. Hendrickson, a Morris police chief 1970 72 and iron worker, is seeking the coroner post.
