Voters defeated two park expansion measures with 1494 to 969 for land purchase and 1415 to 1024 on the $300000 bonds. Spoiled ballots totaled 42 and 61 respectively, with turnout around 2505 and 2500.
Donald A. Davidson Sr. a 24 year City Council veteran, won the Republican mayoral nomination with 1,511 of 2,499 votes 60.5 percent. His nearest foe was Robert Gilbertson with 589 votes 23.6 percent. other candidates trailed. Ballots totaled 2,499 with several write ins and 36 spoiled ballots. Democratic primary saw five votes.
President Nixon hosted foreign ministers from Algeria Kuwait Morocco and Saudi Arabia to discuss the Arab‑Israeli war. Kissinger attended beforehand as part of the session. Oil producers in the Persian Gulf raised crude prices 17 percent in a move linked to the broader conflict.

Oneida County officials recovered a second corpse, likely a woman, in a shallow grave near Enterprise about 200 feet from the grave of Patrolman Anthony Raymond. Investigators think the second body may have been buried in October 1970 and seek links to the 1972 Raymond disappearance in Hillside, Illinois.
The Grundy County Grand Jury, after visiting the jail on Monday, recommended replacing the facility as soon as possible. The report found operations compliant with statutes but criticized the jail's poor physical condition.
The Morris Planning Commission voted 6 to 0 to continue a public hearing to November 6 on a request to rezone about 8 acres west of Ottawa Street from R I to R III for a proposed apartment complex. Harold W. Wagoner, 27, of Rte. 1 Pinegrove, was admitted for observation at Morris Hospital after his 1967 Volkswagen overturned on Pine Bluff Rd at 11 25 p.m. Tuesday. Deputy Tim Neary reports Wagoner left the roadway east of Illinois 47, traveled 79 feet into a ditch, rolled over multiple times, and stopped on its right side. He suffered a scalp laceration and chest pains and was treated at the hospital. The car, valued with $1,000 damage, was towed by Clark's Texaco. Wagoner faces charges for speeding and failure to reduce speed.
