Senate panel cuts Pakistan aid and trims foreign program
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to end all assistance to Pakistan and earmark 85 million for Israel. It cut overall military aid from 705 to 565 million and reduced development loans and Alliance for Progress funds, while delaying final action on Nixon's 3.5 billion request. House panel votes to raise federal minimum wage in two phases
The Education and Labor Committee backed raising the nationwide minimum wage to 2 an hour by Jan 1 for 35 million workers and to 1.80 for 10 million more in 1966 with 1.60 now. Caterpillar to lay off 400 at Joliet plant
Caterpillar will lay off 400 workers at the Joliet plant effective after the Friday shift on Oct. 29. The reduction follows a drop in orders and marks the first Joliet layoff since 1960. Plan to abandon tracks on Illinois Avenue Morris
The Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Co plans to abandon 1.2 miles of tracks from Federal Paper Board to Corn Belt Chemical and the five block stretch on Illinois Ave Morris site. The project includes three railroad crossings and removal of a west bridge over the canal with ICC approval awaited.
