Richardson says White House steered Agnew deal

Attorney General Elliot Richardson defended the agreement that allowed Spiro Agnew to resign after pleading no contest to federal income tax evasion. He said White House counsel J. Fred Buzhardt initiated talks and President Nixon approved the bargain, which spared Agnew prison and imposed probation. He noted some prosecutors opposed leniency and that civil tax questions remain under IRS review.

Elderly Granted Free Admission to MCHS Events

The Morris Community High School Board voted to allow senior citizens free admission to athletic events concerts and plays. They discussed box office procedures Medicare cards, possible rehearsals access, and issued bonds for life safety. The board approved a $320,000 fire protection bond and set substitute teacher pay to 25 daily, with future increases. a piano bid was accepted and a special meeting set to review lay committee reports and the North Central evaluation.

Weather outlook with showers and storms likely today

Forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon with a high near 80. Tonight will be cloudy and mild with more showers and storms, low around the 60s. Friday remains cloudy and cooler with additional showers and highs in the 70s. Wednesday’s high reached 84 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 58 degree low. At 7 am today the temperature was 65 in Morris and 76 by 11 am downtown.

Driver treated after accident on Minooka Road

Opal S. Hoy, 53, of Shady Oaks, Minooka, treated and released from St. Joseph Hospital Joliet after skidding 189 feet into a ditch while attempting to pass a car on Minooka Road. Deputy Sgt Fox and Deputy Olson assisted. Separate incident: John McGee, 38, Joliet, escaped injury when his semi was struck by an E. J. and E. switch engine on Collins Road. engineer Fris blew whistle and the truck skidded 85 feet.

Tool box theft reported near Dwight

Jerry Rohlfs of Route 2 Dwight reported to Grundy County Sheriff's at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday that his tool box was stolen from his combine parked at Goodfarm and Swell roads. He said the theft occurred at noon while he was at home for dinner.

Helena Kerner Dies at Lake Geneva Home

Helena Cermak Kerner 67 wife of former Illinois governor and judge Otto Kerner died at the couple's Lake Geneva summer home. The Walworth County coroner cited no immediate cause. she had recent brain blood clot surgery. Otto Kerner awaits appeals after February conviction. the couple’s two adopted children were visiting friends.

Minooka unit hearing opens amid legal wrangling

Public hearing in the Grundy County Courthouse reviewed petitions to form a Minooka Channahon unit district. Attendees included educators and residents as six attorneys sparred over state rules and previous petitions. A continuation was set for Oct 25 at 7 30 p m in room 25.

Braidwood Police Chief and Three Officers Resign

Braidwood City Council accepted the resignations of Police Chief Jackie Bunting and three patrolmen Wayne Kilpatric Less Heberer and Michael Schott at Tuesday’s meeting. Robert Fitzwater named acting chief. no new patrolmen were added. Final Corn Festival buttons prize winners announced by Grundy County Chamber of Commerce with Mrs Donald Noonan and Troy Norris among winners.

Firemen inspect Morris area schools during Fire Prevention Week

Fire Chief Keith Bartlett reported Morris firemen conducted drills and inspections at Morris public schools Immaculate Conception School Nettle Creek and Saratoga grade schools. Boiler rooms and hallways were checked with satisfactory reports at all sites.

Nine Autos Ticketed on Liberty Street for No Registration

Morris police ticketed nine cars owned by Osmanson Auto Sales for no valid registration at 11 15 a m Wednesday. All vehicles lacked license plates on the 700 block of Liberty Street. Sgt Jack Kopczick issued four tickets and Patrolman Gerald Broderick five. A court appearance is set for Oct 17. No bond noted.

Morris residents rally behind park bond and land purchase

Citizens endorse city park referendum on Oct. 16 urging yes votes. Endorsements from James W. Crupi Morris Rotary Earnest L.
