The council voted 5 3 to raise the mayor’s pay to 5500 a year and remove the liquor commissioner post as a salary item. The clerk’s salary rose from 8500 to 10500, both effective May 1 1973. Funds may come from a federally funded TOPICS program.
Police and IBI agents questioned a man who matched the description of the killer in the IBI officer murder. James Magnus Work, 23, was arrested at the St Louis Greyhound station after observers noted suspicious behavior and found him with a knife and nearly $11,000 in cash. He faced a concealed weapon charge and provided little information.
Godley, a small Will-Grundy county village 61 miles southwest of Chicago, grows from 98 to nearly 300 residents in seven years as industry expands. Coal City plans a water bill survey asking households to state number of residents to gauge need for an official census. The Village Board hopes a citizen turnout will justify census costs and identify missed residents since 1970.
Grundy County deputies investigate a mobile home burglary Monday with an estimated 1440 dollars taken including wrapped Christmas gifts. Damage is about 125 dollars. Reports from David Zilm say the back door knob was knocked off to gain entry. Police list missing items including coins radios tools a rifle and many household goods.
