Northern California coast rocked by offshore quake
A strong tremor woke residents along a 100 mile stretch of the Northern California coast at 3 20 am. The UC Berkeley seismographic station reported magnitude 5 8 while the National Earthquake Information Service listed 6 3. Officials said it was a rolling shake with no serious damage and centered offshore on two faults. Locals including Ferndale Eureka and Crescent City residents returned to sleep.

Holiday toll rises sharply across the nation
United Press International reports a sharp rise in holiday traffic deaths. Five people died in a rain soaked crash on U.S. 290 near Elgin Texas, four in a head on crash on Washington 97 near Wenatchee Washington, three in a Minnesota two car collision near Buhl, and four en route to a Thanksgiving visit in a plane crash near John Day Oregon. As of 11 a.m. EST Friday at least 170 fatalities had occurred since the holiday period began. Texas led with 18 deaths followed by California and Ohio with 11 each. The National Safety Council projects 450 to 550 deaths during the period ending Sunday midnight.

A large quantity of CS tear gas hung in fog near the Golden Gate Bridge injuring several and sending four to hospitals. CHP, military police and San Francisco police checked vandalism as a possible cause around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Local motorists were advised to keep windows closed until the gas-laden fog cleared.

Santa’s Phone Disconnected After Overwhelming Calls
In Wichita Kansas Southwestern Bell cut Santa Claus’s phone line after a surge of calls overwhelmed area phones. The Towne East mall offered a Santa line starting Nov 17 with one line. 1500 calls per hour on day one led to more lines and rapid popularity. By the next week five lines handled 7000 calls hourly, exceeding a 420 call per hour capacity. Amid 200 complaints hourly about dial tone losses misdirected and dead calls the service closed at 5 pm Wednesday leaving children to write or visit Santa in person.

Teens electrocuted installing CB antenna in Carpentersville
In Carpentersville Illinois two youths died after being electrocuted while trying to erect a Citizen's Band radio antenna. Kenneth Gunderson aged 15 and Richard Segal aged 16, both of Carpentersville, died on arrival at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

Aerial Explosion Hits NPC Petrochemical Plant
An explosion and small fire at the Northern Petrochemical plant east of Morris occurred at about 11 15 a m when ethylene gas ignited during a reactor transition. Plant manager Austin Bollen said damage totaled 3000 to 4000 dollars and no injuries were reported.

An unidentified young black woman murdered Oct 2 in Grundy County was buried Thanksgiving morning in Braceville Gardner Cemetery after a coroner's jury ruled homicide by unknown person. The body was found Oct 2 near the LaSalle County line and remained unreleased pending further investigation.
