Grundy County Housing Authority Executive Director Tracy Adcock reported only one bid was received to install 12 additional parking spaces at Saratoga Tower. Charles O'Brien and Son Construction of Morris won the $3,900 contract and work could begin this week.
Smokey Bear, a 26 year old black bear and national symbol for fire prevention, died in his sleep at the National Zoo. The Forest Service spokeswoman cited old age after Smokin Smokey was found dead in his cage early today following retirement in April 1975.
Weather notes show cool conditions with misty and cloudy skies across Morris and Dresden Island. Old Smokey the Bear died after years in retirement with Goldie at the National Zoo. Plans for a Golden Years retirement home in New Mexico were canceled due to inflation.
The filing period for the 1977 city election starts December 15 and runs through December 27. Offices of mayor city clerk and treasurer are up for election along with four alderman seats one per ward. Aldermen terms expiring in 1977 are First Ward John Maunder Second Ward Donald Barkley Third Ward Ray Younger Fourth Ward Robert Gilbertson. The Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station resumes operation after a shutdown on November 1. Mayor salary is $18000 year city clerk $15500 and treasurer $650. Aldermen receive $75 per regular or special meeting attended.
Illinois Department of Revenue reports $15.4 million in delinquent taxes collected in the first quarter of fiscal 1977, starting July 1, the highest first quarter total ever. Director Robert H. Allphin also announced $20.3 million more identified, crediting improved efficiency of revenue workers.
Morris City Council votes to seek bids on scavenger service, city operation of the landfill, and a private operator take over. The move aims to compare costs and determine the most economical garbage plan while considering tax implications and permits. The plan includes bid specs for curb and alley pickups, equipment needs, and a five year permit transfer to the operator if chosen.
Grundy County's vote canvass by County Clerk Lana Phillips shows totals shifted for several races but no outcome changes. Key changes include circuit clerk Robert Williamson gaining 65 votes to 6,230 and coroner James Reeves rising to 8,538 while opponent Hendrickson gained 2 votes to 3,926. clerk Lana Phillips increases to 7,670.
