Morris Planning Commission continues 8-acre apartment plan hearing

The Morris Planning Commission extended the public hearing to Nov 20 for a proposed 80 one bedroom and 18 three bedroom apartment complex on 7.7 acres west of Ottawa St. The plan includes a U shaped one story building, lakefront recreation, 178 off street parking spaces, and zoning from R I to R III.

Martin Dubin seeks Democratic nomination in Illinois 15th

Dr. Martin Dubin NIU associate professor and international relations program coordinator announced his candidacy for the Illinois 15th Congressional District in the March 19 Democratic primary. The district includes DeKalb and Kane counties and several towns. Dubin, 42, holds degrees from City College of New York and Indiana University.

EPA charges Morris plant with water pollution violations

The Oct 31 Newsletter reports the Environmental Protection Agency accuses Federal Paper Board of Morris of discharging untreated wastewater and failing to remove BOD suspended solids fecal coliform sludge debris color odor and turbidity. The plant allegedly constructed waste outlets without permits and bypassed a sanitary sewer into a storm sewer draining into the Illinois Michigan Canal. A hearing is set for Nov 19 at 10 30 a.m. at the First National Bank of Morris.

Weather Outlook Cloudy With Mild Temperatures

The forecast calls for cloudy conditions today with a high in the lower 40s and a tonight low in the upper 30s. Thursday remains cloudy with highs in the 40s. Dresden Island Locks and Dam recorded a high 40 and a low 25, while Morris downtown showed 35 at 7 am and 39 at 10:30 am.

Nine killed in luxury Acampo house in family shooting

Nine people were found shot to death at a luxury ranch-style house in Acampo California about 30 miles south of Sacramento. Sheriff deputies said the killings likely occurred about 9 p.m. Tuesday and a nearby food market owned by a victim was broken into and looted. Walter Parkin 32 Joanne Parkin and two children Lisa 6 and Bob 4 were named among the dead with others unidentified.

United Fund drive shows strong pledges and turnout

Herbert A Wyeth Jr the Grundy County United Fund chairman says solicitors have pledges over thirty thousand dollars or fifty percent of the quota. Caterpillar Tractor and Illinois Bell Telephone employees show a twenty percent rise over last year with the First National Bank of Morris at one hundred percent participation. Bimet Corp employees also report high pledge percentages as chairmen plan a Thursday noon report meeting at the Holiday Inn with up to date tabulations to be presented.

Approve D. C. civil service commission

Coal City residents approved a three member civil service commission for the police department by an eight vote margin. Of 220 votes cast 114 were yes and 106 no. The panel will set job qualifications and exams and may set promotion and discharge procedures. Skylab 3 launch delayed due to cracked stabilizing fins

The Skylab 3 launch is delayed at least five days to November 15 after eight stabilizing fins on the Saturn 1B booster show stress corrosion cracks. Replacement fins are being flown from Michoud Louisiana and repairs may occur on the launch pad. Astronauts Carr Pogue and Gibson train for an 85 day mission to the Skylab station.

Kendall County United Fund announces a 1973 campaign goal of $23 000 up from $15 500 the prior year. About $3 000 in cash has been received. pledges may be designated to the 13 agencies including United Cerebral Palsy and the Red Cross.
