Channahon trustees oppose a Rogers Cartage rendering facility on US 6 near Joliet, noting nearby residential areas and pending permits. at a public hearing EPA reps and Mahoney Grease officials attended while village counsel questioned the process and odor concerns.

Monday’s high reached 54 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 22 low, while 7 am today stood at 38 and 10 am in Morris at 50. ESDA notes yesterday’s Morris high 56 and low 24 with barometric pressure 30.37 and falling. peak wind in the last 12 hours reached 14 mph.
Morris Public Library board denied Jacqueline Wicks a use of the multi purpose room for a junior high program. Librarian Pam Wilson reported October book sale success and firm turnout for the pumpkin contest with nine winners.
Lester Keller 50 of E Division Street died at 8 45 p.m. Monday when his 1972 Oldsmobile left Illinois 113 west of Jugtown Road struck a tree flipped onto its top 12 feet from the tree and 33 feet from the road. Keller was pinned and pronounced dead at the scene by Grundy County Deputy Coroner E E Buzz Livsey. Funeral services for Keller will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church of Foosland with burial in Mt Hope Cemetery Foosland. He was born March 26 1926 in Arrowsmith Illinois and married May Louise Carpenter in 1953 in Foosland. He lived in Grundy County 14 years and worked for Newburg Construction Co. as a truck driver. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mazon Loyal Order of Moose and Morris Lodge. Surviving are his wife two daughters Diana Wilson and Theresa Bannon both of Gardner three sisters and two grandchildren.
President Ford and challenger Carter voted early as millions cast ballots in one of the closest elections in U.S. history. Officials across the nation reported heavy turnout with long lines in many states and remarks on favorable weather aiding participation.
Early returns show a strong voter turnout in Grundy County for the general election. By 10 a.m. 22 of 34 polling places reported high participation with Morris VI leading precincts at 31 percent and other Morris precincts around 21 to 28 percent. Absentee ballots totaled 518 with mail expected to arrive. polls close at 6 p.m.
In Humacao mayor Juan M. Higgins, running for re election, was shot in the left leg after stopping to help a tire changer. In Carolina, youths of the Popular Democratic party beat a rival in a car clash, killing Oscar Luis Hernandez and injuring two others. A Ponce candidate survived an assassination attempt, while a rival called the incident fake drama.
Gregg's Food Products Inc shareholders approve acquisition by A E Staley Manufacturing Co including exchange of Staley stock for Gregg's shares. Gregg's based in Portland will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Staley, joining the Oak Brook consumer products group.
The Supreme Court without Justice Stevens split on a Parker Seal Co case. It ruled federal civil rights law requires employers to accommodate religious needs unless it causes undue hardship to business. Parker fired Paul Cummins for Sabbath refusal at Berea Kentucky plant. Cummins belonged to the World Wide Church of God.
Gardner Village Board met with Mayor Sereno and all commissioners. A bid of 8,857 from Illinois Constructors Co. of St. Charles was accepted to repair the reservoir. The meeting covered sewer permits, swine flu shots, Scout Cabin sewer work, Lions Club tree donations, bicycle tests, a 9 p.m. curfew, and a CPA audit presented by Marvin Smith of Morris.
