Memorial Day Traffic Toll Hits Record

The National Safety Council president urged a billion dollars more annually for highway safety after a record Memorial Day weekend toll of 542 deaths on highways. The period ran from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday, with 47 drowning and 93 boating fatalities. Illinois reported 24 highway deaths. two young motorists died in separate crashes near Harvard and Monticello.

Reid Addresses Grundy GOP Rally Rally emphasizes limits on federal power

U S Congresswoman Charlotte T Reid of Aurora addressed about 300 Republicans at the Grundy County Moose Lodge rally. Two Electrical Faults Triggered Morris Area Blackout

A Sunday night blackout hit Morris and surrounding towns Norway Lisbon and Newark for about one to two hours after a tree fell on a 34 000 volt line from the Dresden nuclear plant and a second fault burned out a jumper. Commonwealth Edison crews restored power, except for one industrial user Material Service Corporation south of Morris.

Douglas speaks at Morris rally in Moose Lodge

Sen. Paul A. Douglas arrived in Morris at noon for a Democratic rally at the Moose Lodge, sponsored by the Grundy County central committee. A noon luncheon preceded his 12:30 p.m. talk, with local and area candidates in attendance including Martin Gleason, Atty. John F. Cirricione, and Joe Russell. Douglas previously spoke in Grundy County two years earlier at the Grundy County fair in Mazon.

Big Machine Operators End 50 Day Strike

In Chicago the 50 day strike by heavy equipment operators on northeastern Illinois construction projects ended. Local 150 president William F. Martin said some workers returned while others took jobs in Michigan Wisconsin Ohio and elsewhere. A new contract retroactive to Jan 1 raises wages by 1.40 per hour for 4500 members and runs to April 30 1970, ending a wage gap from previous agreements.
