Honors Day Awards At Morris Community High School
Morris Community High School held its annual honors day in the gym with Jay Larson as MC. The 1965-66 Chief yearbook dedication honored Latin teacher Miss Lela Short. 23 scholarships were announced by Richard Waterhouse with many named recipients across fields from science to art and Thespians, and student council awards were distributed.

Coal City District Earns Federal Education Funds
Coal City Community Unit No. 1 is among 17 districts to receive HEW allocations under a federal program aiding children of federal employees on tax exempt property. The district gets 16.94 million dollars total, including 18,995 for new school equipment, with about 150 federal employee student residents. Superintendent Pete Di Paolo began the process last October, submitting Bill 815 on November 30, 1965, for equipment across multiple departments at both campuses.

Illinois Bell Telephone Co. wins ICC approval to cut about 8.5 million dollars from annual rates with some changes effective today and others July 2. Reductions include intrastate long distance within 37 to 100 miles of Chicago, unit charges within a 28 mile radius, and elimination of the 5 dollar charge to switch to touch tone phones. Color phone price drops from 4 to 2 dollars. Overtime and in state long distance charges see large cuts, and moving a phone within a building set at 6 dollars. Advance service installations free, and the restoration fee for nonpayment removed.

County Treasurer Mabel Mottaz reminded Grundy County residents that next Wednesday is the final date to pay personal property taxes and the first real estate tax installment by 4 30 p m. Payments are arriving at similar rates to prior years. Many use bank services statewide to pay, while others visit the treasurer’s office. The second real estate installment is due September 1 through October 1.
