Mao Tze-tung Reemerges After Public Hiatus in China

In Tokyo the AP reports Mao Tze-tung, aged 72, met Albanian Premier Mehmet Shehu and delegation, first public appearance since late November. The New China News Agency and Peking radio note Lin Piao and Chou En-lai attended, with Mao hosting a banquet for the visitors.

J F Redmond Named Head of Chicago Public Schools

AP reports James F Redmond, with prior posts in Kansas City New Orleans and Syosset NY, was chosen to run Chicago public schools. Frank M Whiston said the board will ratify the committee’s unanimous selection. Redmond succeeds Benjamin C Willis.

Grundy County Hears New Health Board Appointments

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved an eight member county health board at the May meeting. Lawyers, physicians, a dentist and four citizens were named including Dr. Barry Leng Dr. John Walter Dr. Leslie Tibbitts Earl Bingham Paul Kruse Mrs. Jean McCoy Arthur Allaben and Robert Breisch. The board will oversee a county health department to provide home health nursing services under Medicare beginning July 1 funded mostly by state and federal sources. A public hearing on the proposed county home is set for May 19 at 8 p.m. in the circuit court room. The June primary will carry the county home issue requiring four signs per precinct posted 30 days before the election. Chief Circuit Judge Walter Ryan reappointed Democrat William V. Peterson to the board of review. The session adjourned for a 1:30 p.m. resumption with a University of Illinois speaker scheduled.

Morris Chamber Votes to Buy Yale Decorations

The Morris Chamber of Commerce approved purchasing about $5,000 in new Christmas decorations for the retail division. The directors will cover $2,500 over five years and seek $2,500 from the City of Morris. They also invite the City Council to appoint a representative to the Chamber board. Six industrial committee members plus A. Frank Leathers will attend a state industrial development meeting in Peoria. Directors will study the proposed grade school bond issue without taking a position.

Revamp Plan for Illinois Public Schools Proposed

The Illinois Task Force on Education recommended sweeping changes to finance and organize public schools. A nine member state board of education would appoint a new superintendent, regional school boards would replace county superintendents, and 200 district units would be created. State funding would rise from 330 to 600 dollars per pupil, boosting annual aid from 244 million to 461 million.

Dirksen Injures Hip in Hospital

Senator Everett M. Dirksen Republican leader of the Senate fractured his right hip at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during a routine checkup. Five Killed In Saigon Mine and Shootout

Viet Cong mine exploded in central Saigon triggering a fierce gunbattle as U S sentries fired on crowds. Five people died and 29 to 32 were wounded, including a policeman, three women, and a child. Eight Americans and at least 21 Vietnamese civilians were injured.

Plan to survey Mazon Creek this year for pollution study

Illinois plans a year long survey of six streams including Mazon Creek to assess pollution effects and aid recreational planning. Other sites include upper Vermilion Mackinaw and South Fork of the Sangamon Shoal Cahokia Creeks with prior work on Rock Kishwaukee Sangamon and lower Kaskaskia. The study requires sampling fish, occasionally killing a few in a small section with a non toxic chemical, a negligible share of the population.
