Investigation Reveals High Recall Rate Across Major Automakers

Washington AP notes senators found about 18.5 percent of six year output from Ford General Motors Chrysler and American Motors involved recalls. Officials say 8.7 million cars were recalled and many defects were not safety related though officials estimate over half of defects affected safety.

Senator Dodd Sues Pearson and Anderson for Libel

Sen. Thomas J. Dodd files a 5 million dollar conspiracy and libel suit in U S District Court against columnists Drew Pearson and Jack Anderson. He accuses them of false and defamatory charges over campaign funds and alleged favors from Julius Klein. The case follows a Senate Ethics Committee inquiry into misconduct allegations.

Restoration of Rock Island Property Requires Large Cash Outlay

Robert A. Lovett told an Interstate Commerce Commission hearing that the Rock Island Lines would need substantial capital to restore its railroad to a healthy condition. He called the Rock Island anemic and under-supplied, and said the merger with Union Pacific could benefit Western Pacific through improved service. The hearing is expected to last at least a month with continued testimony Monday.

Finfrock Named Vice President At Local Morris Bank

Wilbur H. Finfrock assumed full time duties as vice president of the First National Bank of Morris. The announcement came from bank president William B. Norton. Finfrock has long served on multiple local boards and business ventures including the Morris Coal Yard, Morris Country Club, Morris Grade School, Morris Savings and Loan, and Morris Hospital. Senate panel accuses Kerr over Berkeley campus activities

The State Senate Committee on Un American Activities blamed UC President Clark Kerr for what it called Communist and homosexual activity on the Berkeley campus. Kerr dismissed the report as inaccurate and distorted. The panel also cited the rehiring of German professor Eli Katz as evidence of Kerr’s lax stance on Communist ties. Rock Island Lines to ask the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to discontinue passenger service between Omaha and Denver Colorado Springs. Trains 7 and 8 run daily Chicago to Colorado cities and incur an annual loss of 664000 dollars on the Omaha segment. If approved, service would continue Chicago to Omaha where public need exists. Operations are at break even on the Chicago to Omaha route.
