President Eisenhower vetoed the farm price support freeze bill saying a thaw is needed for the nation and farm families. He outlined a five point program and noted authorities exist for others to act. The veto ends a lengthy Congress debate with no override in sight.
Two Morris High School music groups tied for first at the Four District Music Contest in LaGrange, earning spots in the state contest on April 19 in Rock Island. More than 100 Morris students competed. the Morris Community High School band earned an excellent rating in the high school band division.
The Morris Fire Department battled five grass fires over the weekend. Saturday saw two calls including a blaze at Mrs. Frank Collins farm home in Goose Lake township and a later flare near Pleasant and Wauponsee. Sunday brought three more incidents at Owen Boyd’s home, West Ave near the tracks, and the City dump, all extinguished.
Funeral services for George Hise 21 of 1632 Grove Street Highland Park and Morris are set for Tuesday at Ridgeway Ill. He died in a Saturday morning crash on U S Highway 41 near Lake Village Indiana along with Herschel Tate. Tate’s last address listed as Des Plaines Ill. Several others were injured.
March brings pleasant weather across Illinois with temperatures rising toward spring. Forecasts show near 60 degree highs for Tuesday and clear skies, while Pyatt station logged 59 degrees yesterday and 28 last night. At 10 00 the marine reading was 48.
Batavia resident Lero Collins, 33, died when his car left the road and plunged 35 feet into a creek one mile south of Batavia. Fred W. Edgar, 25, also of Batavia, survived with multiple injuries after riding with Collins.
In Moscow Premier Khrushchev appoints Nikolai Bulganin as head of the Soviet State Bank while retaining most of his cabinet. Anastas Mikoyan remains first deputy, Andrei Gromyko as foreign minister, and the Supreme Soviet backs the move unanimously.
A mother Anna Wennerstrom 45 and her daughter-in-law Josephine Wennerstrom from Mazon died in a fiery crash 13 miles north of Joliet. Lilaite Novak 31 of Lemont, driving the second car, was treated and released from St. Josephs hospital then jailed for reckless driving. Cockream and his car were also hospitalized and released with charges for improper left turn.
Dr. Walter P Morgan, president emeritus of Western Illinois University, died Sunday. He led multiple education organizations including the American Association of Teachers Colleges and the North Central Association. He is survived by wife Jane and four children. Funeral services will be held in Macomb Tuesday.
A car spun out of control and hit a tree near St. Charles killing four occupants. The dead are Lloyd C. Highland, 33, of Route 1 Ottawa the driver Lou Ann Gray 20 and Janice Strausberger 18 both of Elgin and another passenger from Ottawa Authorities investigate the crash near State Maulk.
A large crowd attended an auction at Ed Gein's Wisconsin farm drawing about 2,500 bidders. Mayer and Gein’s 195 acre property with several outbuildings sold to Emden Schey and Allen Lite of Sun Prairie for 38,025, as buyers sought items from the infamous killer’s estate.
The Grundy County Community Concert Association announced its 1958-59 drive was successful with 328 adult and 62 student memberships sold across the county. The total nearly matched last year’s fall drive. The drive is now closed and efforts shift to notifying members.

Four Stanford University hikers marooned by snow in Yosemite National Park were rescued by helicopter. All are in good condition and taken to a hospital for observation. The group included two women and two men, aged 21 to 22, from Wisconsin, Orinda, and Livermore. One member, William Pope, was ill with a respiratory infection.
