A five man Alpine team reached Mt Eiger summit via the north wall marking the first ascent of this direct route. Joerg Lehne and Guenther Strobel led the climb with four Germans and a Briton enduring 40 below wind and 30 days on the wall. Teammate John Harlin had died days earlier.

Ferguson Receives 50 Year Banking Pin at IL Bankers Dinner

The House Appropriations Committee trimmed two new domestic programs in the 1966 nonmilitary money bill. Motorola Inc won its three year battle with the Illinois Fair Employment Practices Commission.
