In heavy fog on I-90 west of Elgin Illinois about 50 cars and trucks collided injuring six with one in critical condition. A cattle truck was involved and there were dead cattle on the road and wounded cows. Two or three semi trailers overturned and eastbound lanes were closed for about 25 miles.
Three truckers were injured in area wrecks investigated by state police. Thomas Lindhorst of Stafford Arizona remained hospitalized after a northbound I 55 crash near Illinois 47 Sunday night. Robert Schnelle of Cahokia was treated and released after an I 55 hog truck overturned two miles north of Gardner, with three dogs killed. Reggie Dunn of Hiawatha Iowa was treated and released after an I 80 rollover east of Seneca. Police cited separate causes and vehicles, with responders rerouting hogs and aiding casualties.
Three-vehicle crash at 11:20 p.m. on Division St sent Kenneth L. Shannon and Phyllis J. Olson to Morris Hospital. Shannon remained hospitalized for observation after his car struck Olson’s Mercury and pushed it into Rick D. Barnett’s pickup. Olson was released after treatment. Shannon faces a failure to reduce speed citation. All vehicles sustained over $250 damage.
The Israeli Cabinet approved the Egypt peace treaty by a 15 2 vote. Parliament debate starts Tuesday with a foregone conclusion of approval. Carter brokered the deal during a Mideast peace mission and a Washington signing could occur as early as next Monday.
Rain today gives way to partly sunny skies and warmer air. Much of the area stays chilly with highs in the 50s in snow covered zones and 60s elsewhere, lows in the mid to upper 30s. Tuesday looks partly sunny. At Dresden Lock and Dam the Saturday high reached 47 and low 34 with .11 inches of precipitation. Sunday’s high was 68 and low 41. At 7 am the temperature was 50 with .76 inches of precipitation. Downtown Morris at 10:40 am registered 57 degrees.
A second Gacy victim identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner brings the total identified bodies to 14. The name remains withheld until next of kin is notified, with the victim described as a missing Chicago youth. Identification used dental charts. news comes as the 29th skeleton was found Friday under the house.
Carpenters Local 1092 business agent declined comment on a Grundy County Courthouse picket. County board president William Waters said he had not spoken with the union. He noted a Feb 13 contract award to Hans Tietz for remodeling the second floor for the Kendall Grundy superintendent’s office, with nonunion Tietz stating he would pay union scale. The next lowest bidder was Narvick Bros. and Serena Construction bid higher.
Kendall County Internal Affairs Committee ruled off duty deputy Tim Batley acted justifiably when he shot at three juveniles during a March 6 armed robbery at Pride Gas Station north of Oswego. Scott Grady, 16, was killed. Stephen Grady was injured. Lynnwood Valor, 16, was later captured.
The U S Supreme Court was asked to review a lower court ruling ordering the St Louis Fire Department to promote 12 black firefighters to captain. Local 73 of the International Association of Fire Fighters filed the petition arguing some white firefighters faced reverse discrimination.
Morris police investigated a string of vandalism and burglary-like break-ins reported after 8 a m. at three Liberty Street businesses Baum's Inc Funk's Hideaway and Jordan's Shoes where windows were kicked in but entries denied and doors remained locked. A separate 8 10 a m. report said Cheryl Lynes’s car on East Main Street had been entered with a $20 purse stolen plus papers. a further 1 a m. attempt to enter Gustave Nelson’s East Main Street apartment was unsuccessful.
A New Lenox woman, Gwendolyn Ruda, 31, was treated and released from Morris Hospital after a Division Street collision involving three cars. Police said Lawrence Malaker, 39, of Aurora, rear ended her stopped vehicle, pushing it into Raymond Schaefer’s 1977 Maverick. All three cars sustained under $250 damage. the other drivers were uninjured.
Kendall County Board update covers a new countywide rural road name and numbering plan set to take effect March 1, 1980. The system assigns fire numbers to most routes with Route prefixes on highways and uses 20 foot intervals for house numbers, plus a subdivision rule, while the county building office will assign all numbers and owners receive notice beforehand.
