Vanguard rocket makes one of most perfect flights
Navy’s Vanguard rocket placed the 34 pound satellite in orbit from Cape Canaveral at 6 16 a m CST after two prior failures. President Eisenhower announced the successful orbit of Vanguard and Explorer joining Sputnik II, with orbit inclination about 35 degrees and an elliptical path of 300 to 1500 miles altitude, completing a cycle every 90 to 100 minutes. The satellite may remain aloft 5 to 10 years, traveling at 18000 to 19000 mph, with a visible third stage expected at sunset and sunrise. The tiny satellite cannot be tracked directly, but the third stage will be observable as it trails the craft.
