The House Appropriations Committee approved full funding for continued SST supersonic civilian aircraft development. A bill to provide 289.9 million for two prototypes was sent to the House floor for debate with passage expected next Thursday.
LaSalle County Coroner James S. Thompson said no inquest date has been set for Leslie H. Caffee a 17 year old Ottawa youth who died after a one car Grundy County crash on U S 6 Feb 22. Caffee died at Ayburn Hospital after transfer from Morris Hospital.
A Kenworth semi rolled over on Interstate 80 one mile east of Seneca Road at 4 45 am Sunday releasing 172 hogs. Driver Gerald Lantz 33 of Mt Carroll dropped a cigarette lighter causing the crash. 24 hogs died and 150 survived with about 3000 in damage. Local arrangements housed the hogs and Lantz was ticketed for improper lane usage.
A cold front moves into the Midwest ending mild conditions in Illinois as weekend highs near the mid 40s and Saturday near 65 at Dresden Island Locks. Forecasters call for mostly cloudy and windy tonight with lows around the 30s. Sunday's 39 to 65 swing noted with .55 inch precipitation measured and early readings of 39 at 7 am Morris and 40 downtown at 11 am.
Foreign Minister Abba Eban left for the United States to push for reopening the Suez Canal under an interim accord to move Middle East talks forward. He will press Washington that Israel will not concede the Arab sectors of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, and Sharm el Sheikh while meeting with Secretary Rogers and Swedish envoy Jarring. Eban says both governments showed openness to canal opening before a general agreement. Prime Minister Golda Meir faces opposition for a Times interview proposing Sinai demilitarization and a mixed peace force, with Gahal calling for Knesset debate and government defeat votes.
Morris Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a 7:30 p.m. public hearing at City Hall on a variance for Kenneth Sereno to allow a two car garage at 308 Calhoun Street. Timed at 28 feet 4 by 25 feet, the structure would be four feet from the west lot line, conflicting with the five foot setback rule.
Severe gusts amid thunderstorms lashed Missouri Sunday night causing widespread damage in Marthasville and Cape Girardeau. No injuries were reported. a funnel cloud was seen near Cape Girardeau as debris and downed trees, a demolished carport, and unroofed grocery were noted.
In Joliet Illinois police report two men William Proctor and Russell Harper both 18 were charged with burglary after a string of electronic thefts from apartments and automobiles. Over 600 cartridge tapes and stereo equipment were found in Proctor s car and home. Police said two additional suspects were being sought. Most thefts occurred at five large Joliet area apartment complexes.
A Marion County case moves as Associ ate Circuit Judge Robert W. Malmquist disqualifies himself citing circumstances in the Banks case. He will seek another judge to hear a motion by State's Atty. Richard Wilder for a psychiatric examination of Banks. The motion was first raised before Circuit Court Judge Walter Dixon and was later pursued by Wilder with Adcock presenting Friday.
State's Attorney Richard Wilder said a federal court in El Paso will decide on transferring Donald Mack Flippin, indicted for burglary and bail bond violation. Flippin faced sentencing on two counts of violating the federal firearms act after prior failure to appear in February.
The body of Elizabeth McKinney, 54, a Galesburg waitress, was found Sunday night in a ditch along a secluded country road in Warren County northeast of Monmouth. Her husband Gaylord McKinney reported her missing March 3.
The ivory billed woodpecker, once abundant in southern forests, appears extinct as naturalists report its last sighting in 1967 in Texas. Officials express hopelessness despite renewed calls and a tape recorded mating call heard in South Carolina, with no confirmed sightings since.
