Winds Hit Northern Illinois as Storms Destroy Planes

Thunderstorms with high winds struck northern Illinois early today destroying eight planes at Du Page County Airport and damaging a hangar. Barns fell at Kaneville and trees and lines fell across Kane, Du Page, and LaSalle counties. Rain and downed wires affected Chicago area. another storm-wide system produced 85 to 100 mph winds in Kansas City region with aircraft losses.

Weather Summary From Collins Station For The Weekend

Yesterday a high of 95 and a low of 68 were recorded at Collins Weather Station. Today will be mostly sunny and less humid with a cooler feel. Tonight the temperature will fall to the lower 60s under fair skies. Saturday brings mostly sunny, cooler, and drier conditions with a high in the lower 80s. Sunday looks partly sunny and warm. Through Wednesday a trend of 3 to 4 degrees below normal highs of 82 to 86 and lows of 62 to 65 is expected. Cooler with about an inch of rain possible in thundershowers this weekend. At 11:30 a.m. downtown Morris reported 78 degrees and pleasant conditions.

Unknown Driver Causes Accident on I 80 Stockdale Overpass

Harvey Van Cleave, 34, of Route 1, was eastbound on Interstate 80 when an unknown vehicle crossed the median, forcing him to swerve into the westbound lanes and into a ditch. George Whitmore, a Redondo Beach, California pilot, witnessed the crash. Van Cleave received seven stitches and was treated and released from Morris Hospital.

Youth Killed in One Car Crash Near Joliet

Dennis Kirkove 20 of Chilliothe died early today in a one car crash on Interstate 80 near Interstate 55. The 1969 Buick was demolished and towed from the scene. An inquest is planned next week.

Overheated smokestack sparks Morris fire response

The Morris Fire Department fought a small blaze at the Morris Daily Herald building on 124 E. Washington St. at 8 50 a m. The melting pot chimney had oil buildup. Firefighters used a CO2 extinguisher and let the fire burn out on hot metal. Damage was limited to ceiling plaster. Assistant pressman Calvin Hammond received a second degree burn on his right arm and was treated at Morris Hospital.

A burglary at the CC Roofing Co on Depot St was discovered at 3:50 a.m. by policemen James Anderson and Robert Lynes who found the front door open and the office ransacked. Entry was gained by breaking a window in the tool room and crawling through the ceiling. a checkwriter, petty cash, and blank checks were missing.

The Grundy County Zoning Commission led by Atty. David F. Root presented its proposed zoning ordinance and district maps to the County Board of Supervisors after more than five years of work. Two Teens Charged in Gardner Trico Service Burglary

Two youths Larry Cote 19 and Dennis Simmons 18 both of Bradley faced circuit court after being charged with burglary of the Trico Service Station at Illinois 53 and 129 near Gardner. A third youth Brodis Smith Jr. 18 of Bourbonnais was charged earlier. all held on bonds set at 2500 with cases continued to July 11.
