The Ottawa Illinois Junior Chamber of Commerce won the grand sweepstakes for the project of the year at the JayCee convention in Milwaukee. They transformed a riverfront plot into a city park valued at 35000 dollars, raising funds and performing 10000 to 15000 man hours over three years, with completion in 1956.

The Summer Festival continues through Saturday with 13 rides and a Children’s Matinee on Saturday afternoon with special ride prices.

William H. Beckwith, president of Morris Paper Mills, a Federal Paper Board unit, plans retirement on July 1. Rescue saves Jeanne Crain and family at Newport Beach
Coast Guard reports actress Jeanne Crain, her husband Paul Brinkman, and their four children aboard a 51 foot power cruiser that drifted for nearly three hours after engine trouble. A passing ship towed the vessel just off the Newport Beach jetty before it would have struck the jetty. Brinkman and Crain had resolved marital issues earlier in the year and the family endured seasickness and exhaustion during the emergency.
